Post subject: Warsaw Uprising Aug 1-Oct 2, 1944
At 5 pm Polish time, alerted by the sounds of civil defense sirens, people in towns and cities all over Poland will stop for a minute to pay homage to the Heroes who fought for Poland in the Warsaw Uprising of 1944.
The Uprising broke out at 5 pm on August 1, 1944. The insurgents expected they would have to fight for not more than a week. The struggle lasted for two months.
Unfortunately, the heroism did not bring the expected results. About 200 000 people were killed, most of them civilians, and the city was almost totally destroyed by the Nazis.
We would like to share with you links to a website devoted to the Warsaw Rising http://www.warsawuprising.com
and two short films dedicated to the anniversary.
When I was a child I saw the film "Kanal" and was very impressed about the underground fighting, though I was not aware of the uprsingi itself by then. This year I read Norman Davies' book "Rising '44 - The battle for Warsaw". No Magrowski in the uprising, though some in the resistance/ killed by Gestapo/deported to Siberia/ and POW.
