The National Declassification Center, National Archives, has released recently declassified documents relating to the massacre of Polish officers in the Katyn Forest at the start of World War II. A good reference source. I had found my then missing great grandfather, Jozef Mytych, in the listing.

dancinchantilly,
Thank you for posting on this subject. Here is a link to the US National Archives webpage about Records Relating to the Katyn Forest Massacre:
http://www.archives.gov/research/foreign-policy/katyn-massacre/

According to historians and journalists in Poland, the declassified documents will not bring any startling revelations concerning the Allies' handling of the Katyn Affair (see
http://www.thenews.pl/1/10/Artykul/111687,America-to-release-Katyn-files)

And here is a link to a website under the auspices of Poland's Foreign Ministry, http://katyncrime.pl/Main,page,258.html where you can read more, including a timelines of events related to the Katyn Massacre.

It is a crime that the leadership of the United States decided to turn a blind eye to the incident in the attempt to placate the Soviets when they were our ally in WWII - "for the enemy of my enemy is my friend."

However, the reason, calming Cold War tensions, after WW II, just plain reek of political expediency and cowardice.

I am ashamed of my country that it hid the truth for so long and never called for an accounting by the guilty parties.

Well said. 72 years later and our government has yet to issue a simple apology for failing to hold the Soviets accountable. Embarassed
