Hello,

My name is Daniel and I was born in Poland in 1986 in Suwalskie. I was moved to an orphanage in Bialystok some time after that. I was then adopted by American parents in 1989. I have a variety of documents Polish passport, Birth Certificate ( has my adoptive parents listed as my parents). I also have a "karta stattystyczna przekroczenia granicy prl " which has a "numer ewidency jny" on it. I believe it has what my research suggests is my PESEL so don't think i should post that.

I do not know anything about my Polish family heritage, and it seems that adoption records are sealed in Poland. I grew up really only knowing that I was found on the street and was sent and orphanage. I might also be 1 of 5 siblings. Some research of old paperwork showed the name "Daniela Andruszkiewicza" as a possibility of my birth name.

I do not expect to find much information, but maybe enough to find a building to go look at when I get the chance to travel back to Poland for my first visit.

Thanks!

Hello Daniel,

You have a large project ahead of you, but let me help you begin by giving you assistance with one small but important detail.

You mention some paperwork shows the name "Daniela Andruszkiewicza." What this means is, it is referring to something belonging to Daniel Andruszkiewicz. In English, if we want to say something (for example, a cat) belongs to Daniel, we write that it is Daniel's cat. But in Polish, to say the same thing, you say kot Daniela. The same with the surname. If I ask you, "Whose house is that?" you will say it is the Andruszkiewicz's house, but a Pole will say it is the " dom Andruszkiewicza." So, you need to subtract that letter a from the ending of both names.

It may be of interest to you to see the distribution of the surname Andruszkiewicz in Poland:

Good luck in making some progress with your research,
Sophia

Hi Daniel,

I too am an adoptee. I was adopted here in the USA through Catholic Social Services.
By any chance do you know the name of the orphanage? Maybe you can contact them and ask questions in regards to your adoption.

Through Catholic Social Services, adoptees were allowed to ask for “non-identifying information”. I was able to find out that I had siblings, what my biological parents’ looked like, their ages, and occupations at the time of my birth. I was also able to find out some medical information. Maybe you can find the same information from the orphanage.

The other thing was the CSS would send a letter to the biological mother telling them that their child reached out for information. The letter also asked the biological mother if they would want to meet their child. Maybe the orphanage will do the same thing.

The other thing was I was baptized with my biological name at the church next to the orphanage. Maybe you can find out if you were baptized.

You said you have some documents. Do any of these documents have clues on them about your biological parents? Are you adoptive parents still alive? Are they willing to discuss this issue with you? Maybe they know more than they are telling you? My adoptive mother use to drop hints about my adoption as she got older. Or maybe another family member might know something about your true identity.

Did you do your DNA? By doing my DNA, I was able to find two of my nieces as well as many distant cousins. This all helped me piece together information I have collected over the years.

My adoptive parents will always be my loving parents, and I thank God every day for them. But they couldn’t tell me things about myself especially when it came to medical issues that are hereditary.

Maybe someone on the forum who is from Poland might know how to go about finding information if you were adopted.

I wish you luck with your search!
Regards,
Trish
