Dear Michael,

I would like to kindly ask for your assistance with translating a German document, especially the handwritten sections at the top and bottom of the page. I have tried using online tools, but they struggle with deciphering handwritten German.

If you could take a look and help with the translation, I would be extremely grateful. Your expertise would be invaluable to me.

Thank you very much in advance for your time and support!

Best regards,
Anna

Hi Anna,

This document is a registration card (Meldekarte). The upper part informs about the person: Xenia Richter, an unmarried worker (ledige Arbeiterin), born 24 April 1894 in Lodz, county Lodz, of German nationality and Protestant confession. She arrived from Lodz on 16 May 1946. Her stay was planned to be temporarily (vorübergehender Aufenthalt), her address was Dämling Haus Bahnhofstraße 23. She died on 14 November 1946 in Munich, Trogerstraße 17 (this information is written on top of the card as well as in the lower part). The death was recorded from the civil registry office (Standesamt) München II, no. 3183 of 1946.

Best regards,
Michael

Post Posted: Wed Oct 01, 2025 11:41 am      Post subject: Possible marriage of Johan Stern and Henriette Pontow
Reply with quote

Greetings!

My 2x great grandfather was Gustav Emil “Gust” Stern born 1864 in Neudorf, Posen (Today: Nowa Wieś, Czarnków-Trzcianka). We know from his birth record that his parents were Johann Stern and Henriette Pontow. I found the attached marriage record many years ago (on this site https://szukajwarchiwach.pl, but I can no longer find it on the impossibly hard to use new version of the site!). The date is from 1859, and the location is near Neudorf, so I'm hopeful this is the correct record for Gustav's parents. Entry 15 is the line in question. I cropped out the bottom part of the sheet, but kept the top so you can see the headers and dittos. I also bumped the contrast quite a bit to make it easier to read!

What I can make out:
Left column: Carolina (I assume this place: http://www.kartenmeister.com/preview/City.asp?CitNum=24917)
Marriage date: 31 May [1859 not shown on this page]
Bride and groom: I can see "Stern," "Neudorf," "Pontow" and "Carolina" but can't quite make out the details of the rest.
Ages?: 43 and 24
Right column: Schönlanke (http://www.kartenmeister.com/preview/City.asp?CitNum=24946)

It would be wonderful if you could help confirm what I'm seeing, and also fill in the gaps. I'm not sure if Carolina or Schönlanke is the marriage place for example. I'm also happy to crop this down even more if you don't want all the extra stuff. Thank you!

Hi,

This is what I read:

Ort / Place: Carolina

No. 15

Monat / Month: do [ditto] refers to the previous entry: May

Tag / Day: 31.

Wer getraut. / Name of the priest: Fähnike

Name, Stand Wohnort, Geschlecht der Getrauten / Name, Status, Place of Residence, Gender of the Spouses: Der Wittwer Joh[an] Stern zu Neudorf und die Wittwe Henriette Pontow geb. Pontow zu Carolina / The widower Johan Stern from Neudorf and the widow Henriette Pontow, born Pontow, from Carolina

[I’m not sure about the maiden name of Henriette, but it looks to me as if a Pontow married a Pontow in her first marriage. There is a birth record in Schönlanke for Henriette Ponto, born on May 11, 1834, daughter of Johann Ponto.]

Ob schon einmal verheitratet. / Whether married previously: Beide / Both

Ob Eltern oder Vormund / Whether Parents or Guardian [to provide the consent]: none [as they were previously married a consent wasn’t required]

Religion / Religion: [refers to the first entry of the year] both Protestant

Alter / Age: He 43 years, She 24 years

Aufgebot / Proclamation of the bans: 15/ 22/ 29 May

Konsense. / consent: none

Wo getraut. / Were married: Schönlanke

Best regards,
Michael

Thank you for going into so much detail, Michael! This is wonderful. Very interesting about the Pontow name. I suppose it was bound to happen that a Pontow would marry a Pontow at some point; there seem to be lots of them in that area at that time!

I found the 1834 birth record too, but it appears that that particular Henriette sadly died only 10 months later. However, there is another Henriette (Ponto, no "w") born in June of 1836. I've got some work ahead of me determining if this is the right match, but this is a great start.

Thanks again!
~Adam
