Post subject: Surname and Location Confusion?
I've been researching my surname Zawora for a few years now, and have not had much success. I recently came across a record of a great aunt, which is messing with my mind. It is an immigration record from Philadelphia, Pa. On the record she gives her surname as Zawora, but then gives her next of kin in Poland as her father, Stanislaus Zaworski. Wouldn't it be proper in Polish for her name then to be Zaworska? All the children that came to this country also dropped the (ski). Is this common, and might I be researching the incomplete name? To add more confusion, she says she was born in Krzywa, Russia, but is a citizen of Austria. Does anyone know the reason Polish families changed the forms of their names as to why they dropped the (ski). Between dealing with the misspelling of the names at Ellis Island, and the name changes, it's no wonder this research is so hard.

Thanks for the responce folks, I was confused more that they would use different surnames within the same family. When I do a search in Polish web sites, with just Zawora I get few hits, even in the area I know they came from, I will try searching Zaworski also now and maybe will find them in the records that way. Again thanks for your help.
