Hello all,
I am brand new to this forum, trying to find out information about my grandfather Jacob Weinstein. I have found naturalization documents and have discovered.....
He was Jewish and born in 1891 in Lomza Russin (Poland) and emigrated to New York USA in 1913 with his wife and one daughter, on the Bremen Ship from Germany (unfortunately I could not find the passenger list from there) He did get his naturalization in the USA in 1920.

Not sure if he changed is name prior to coming to USA.
Any insight to name or possible location of birth town or where to find other records would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Bethc

Hi,
Welcome to the Forum.
In order to help you, we need a little more information. Do you have any documents you can share with us?
Your grandfather's last name can be spelled in many ways: Weinstein, Wejnstein, Wensztejn...

Regards,
-Barb

You mentioned that you have not found the Manifest, but could you share with us the naturalization from 1920. Was he married in Poland or USA? Do you know something about his parents?

hi
Unfortunately I do not have his parents names, he was married in Poland and according to the Naturalization document he said wife Dora was from Lomza Poland ( Born sept. 15, 1892)
and daughter Beatrice. (Born August 20, 1912) Russia

Country of origin Republic of Russia in some areas it says Poland. I do not have any documents that might have been from Poland/Russia only since he was in the USA like Census.

Hi Barb,
I'm trying to find the manifest now. I did find the family in the 1825 New York State census as well as in the 1930, 1940, and 1950. I'm trying to find them in the 1920 census too. I do know their children were Beatrice, Rose, and Philip. Only Beatrice was born in Poland.

Warm Regards,
Trish

Thank you Barb for sharing that information with the group. I did discover all that online through public records. I guess I’m trying to get insight from the group as to how to gather information from his home country Poland/ Russia. The public records give no evidence of his birth place, parents etc.

Thank you
Beth

Hi Beth,

I understand you are looking for records from Poland for your ancestors. I was hoping to find the ship's manifest for Jacob and his family because it could be full of clues. Some clues could be a relative was still in the "old country of where the family came from", another clue could be they are going to a relative in the USA. These are all important clues to help find your family.

Did you get the death records for Jacob and Dora? It could list their parents' names.

Regards,
Trish

hello,

I have been trying desperately to find the ship manifest but not finding anything, the naturalization record has date and ship name but I can not locate. I made a request at the national archives so maybe they will be able to locate.

I attempted to get death certificate of grandfather but in New York City the name of both parents are required which I do not have.

Just a thought: On the Naturalization petition, it appears that one witness is a Solomon Weinstein. Maybe trying to find more about him might be helpful?

Good Luck with your search, jajan.

Hi,
I checked every resource I could find. There are no years that could be of help to us, unfortunately. I could possibly write an email to AP Bialystok, Lomza branch and ask if they have the synagogue records from the years Dora, Jakub and their daughter were born.
Yes, Manifest can contain important information.

If he died before 1948 in NYC then you can see the death certificate yourself, online, for free. Although this has a place to fill in the number of the death certificate, you can ignore that, it is not necessary:
https://stevemorse.org/vital/nycgov.html?type=death
If you are unsure of his year of death, then search just by his name and look at the various records that come up. It will not give you a specific town of birth, it will likely just say Poland, but it will give his parents' names if the person filling out the information on the death certificate actually knew that. So what would help, if you have to sift through a bunch of these, is if you recognize some other detail on the death cert such as where he was living or the name of his wife or even the name of the cemetery he was buried in.
If he died later than 1948, then this will not help.

Regarding the manifest, he should have sailed on the ship Bremen, from the port of Bremen, arriving at Ellis Island on or about 18 December, 1913 if we trust what was written in his naturalization petition. Sometimes those are correct, sometimes not. As I understand it, no one has been able to find his manifest yet. I will add that he may have come with his wife and child or he may have come first and sent for them to arrive later. Either is a possibility.

If you want to see the manifest for the ship Bremen, here is a list of her arrivals in the year 1913:
https://stevemorse.org/cgi-bin/boat.php?series=&rollStart=&rollEnd=&volumeStart=&volumeEnd=&monthStart=&dayStart=&yearStart=1913&monthEnd=&dayEnd=&yearEnd=1913&boatkind=starts&boat=Bremen&offset=1&portkind=starts&port=&pageSize=50&database=all&local=yes&auth=
And you see the most promising one arrived on 17 December. I did look, briefly, at it, but you may wish to go through the pages yourself and be certain. And if you do not find him there, you may try an earlier arrival date.

Here's what you do. Click on the blue underlined "Bremen" and it will take you to the first image of that manifest. Beneath that, you see the keys for "frame" which is probably self explanatory. Advance by one page using Frame +1, go back two pages by using Frame-2. You see that the first few images are just US citizens, so skip them. You will find the handwriting is not optimal. You might try scanning down the surname column first, looking for Weinstein, then scanning back up the page in the given name column, looking for Jacob. You might just look at the nationality column and notice that a given page has only people from Hungary, and not scan the names on that page at all. See what technique works for you. It was a large ship with a lot of passengers, so the manifest will be very long.

If you feel like he may not have meant the ship Bremen, but just filled that in because all he remembered was the port he had sailed on, here is a listing of all the ships that arrived at Ellis Island from the 10th to the 31st of December 1913:
https://stevemorse.org/cgi-bin/boat.php?series=&rollStart=&rollEnd=&volumeStart=&volumeEnd=&monthStart=12&dayStart=10&yearStart=1913&monthEnd=12&dayEnd=31&yearEnd=1913&boatkind=starts&boat=&offset=1&portkind=starts&port=&pageSize=50&database=all&local=yes&auth=
Looking at this list, I see the ship Main arrived on 18 December, also having sailed from Bremen. This would be my next choice for a manifest to look at.

Let me know if I have been unclear in my instructions, or if you want to find some other ship or other date.

Good luck,
Sophia
