Researching the Kolasa – Bąkowski family in Świętokrzyskie Province.

Jan Kolasa, the third of ten known children of Mikołaj Kolasa and Aniela Bonkowska (or Bakowska) was born in Czachów, (Aniela’s hometown) in 1891. He was baptized in Ożarów. The family soon moved to Opatów where seven more children were baptized. (I have those records.) It is still unconfirmed where the eldest children Eugenia and Stanislaw were born.

I would appreciate it if somebody could give me a complete translation of Jan’s birth record from Russian to English https://metryki.genbaza.pl/genbaza,detail,385512,10#. Unfortunately, the binding makes the left side of the document harder to read.

So far, I have been unsuccessful in finding the marriage record in appx 1886-1887 for Mikołaj Kolasa and Aniela Bonkowska. Aniela’s Declaration of Intent states that they were married in Ożarów parish.

That declaration also says she was born in Czachów in Sept 1872 and that Mikolaj was born in Krzczonowice (Ćmielów parish) in October 1865. I take those dates with a grain of salt because dates are inconsistent and often inaccurate in the families US records.

I am hoping that the marriage record and births are online somewhere and I am just not finding it:)

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated

Hi,
This was not easy to read. I did the best I could. I am unsure whether all the surnames were read correctly.

Czachów no.12 Jan Ludwik Kolasa
It happened in Ożarów on March 1/13, 1891, at 9 a.m.
Appeared Mikołaj Kolasa, 30 years old, living in Czachów, in the presence of Józef Bonkowski, 26 years old and Antoni Batug, 36 years old, living in Czachów and presented Us a newborn male child, informing that he was born in Czachów 1/13 of the current month and year at midnight, to his lawful wife Aniela née Bonkowska, 22 years old.
At the Holy Baptism held today by the priest Władysław Gudnikowski, the child was given the name Jan Ludwik and his godparents were Józef Kurpias and Marianna Sałacina*, Ludwik Sałata, Antoni Kurpias**. This act was read to the declarant and witnesses, and due to their illiteracy, it was signed only by Us.
Priest's signature

*Sałacina - feminine form of surname Sałata
** I have no explanation for why 4 people are listed as godparents. In the Catholic rite, there are usually only 2.

I could not find anything more online. Unfortunately, there is no access to the records from the years that are of interest to you. The only help I can suggest is to contact AP Kielce, Sandomierz branch. I checked the birth records of all 8 children to see how old the parents were when the children were born. On average, it appears that Mikołaj was born around 1860–61, and Aniela around 1867–69.

Barb, your translation of the godparents names gave me a couple of leads! I played a hunch, searching Kolasa and Sałata on Geneteka and found an index to an 1890 marriage in Cmielow for Marianna Kolasa and Ludwik Sałata, with a town of Krzczonowice. It shows Marianna as the daughter of Józef Kolasa and Marianna Parka. Mikolaj's death record shows Józef as his father's name, with an unknown mother. Marianna Kolasa Sałata may be a sister or half sister.

Searching Kolasa and Parka, I then found an index to a 1931 death for 66 year old Salomea Kałucka, daughter of Józef Kolasa and Marcjanna Parka in Kornacice in Ptkanów. This could be another sibling or half sibling of Mikołaj Kolasa.

Hi Diane,
It is great that the information from Jan Ludvik’s birth record provided new leads. I don’t think the last two mentioned were godparents. The grammatical form does not seem to indicate that, and there are no commas between the names either. Perhaps the priest meant to write Mariana Sałacina, that is, Ludvik Sałata’s wife. I’m not sure. I have never seen 4 godparents in a Catholic baptism.
