Interesting legend about attitudes towards the name Mary in the old days. As for the surname, I've seen it spelled very strangely, but my grandfather used "Piantkowski," and his sister later corrected her own birth certificate to read "Piontkowski".
I wish Dobczyce had more records available online. As it is I am again considering contacting the parish Andrzej and Mary had their marriage at. Have you had success in acquiring records this way?
Yes, absolutely, give the church a try. Some of them are set up with a genealogy request form on their website. Others are not geared up like that and you need to contact the office and ask if they will help you. Some will do a transcript of the record for you, but if the original is in Polish or in difficult handwriting then this is not always helpful. Having them send you an image of the original record would be optimal in that case. Some churches will ignore genealogy requests or outright refuse them. You don't know until you try. I hope you get a positive response.
Any insight into why or when Marya left the Utica area and went to Pennsylvania?
