Post subject: Translator IN NYC - Polish Citizenship
Hi:
Can anyone pass along contacts who can help translate documents that are needed to confirm Polish citizenship by descent. I also have a son who plays professional football and getting the paperwork sorted for a European Passport would be very helpful.
Thanks
Chris

Hi Chris,
For the citizenship application, the translations of your US documents (birth, marriage, naturalisation records) normally have to be made by a Polish sworn translator (tłumacz przysięgły). The Polish Ministry of Justice publishes the official list of sworn translators, and most of them work from scans, so they don't need to be in NYC. Your lawyer will tell you exactly which documents need translating and in what form.
On Stanisław's 1888 baptism: since the index Barb could see starts in mid-1889, when you write to the Białystok Archdiocesan Archive (as suggested in your other thread), ask for a full copy of the baptism act with the 26 Feb 1888 date, and ask where the Kuźnica books for 1888 are held if they don't have them. That saves a second round of letters.
If it helps in the meantime, I read old Polish, Latin and Russian records and can tell you what yours say; feel free to send me a private message.

Thank you - yes I am aware that the translations need to be made by a Polish sworn translator. I didn't know if anyone had a recommendation.
As far as the birth certificate and baptism [email protected] said they are researching it and will be back.
Thanks for your information
Chris

Glad Tarnów is looking. One thing worth keeping in mind: in your other thread Barb found a Stanisław from Iwanowce in the Kuźnica parish (Białystok area), and the manifest gives Iwanowce as both his residence and birthplace. If Tarnów comes back empty, Białystok is the next place to ask.
On translators: I don't have a single name to recommend, but the Ministry of Justice's official register of sworn translators can be searched by language (English) and city, and many will quote from a scan. Asking two or three for a quote on the full set of documents at once usually gets a better price than paying per page.
Good luck with it, and with your son's passport.
