Post subject: Searching for Maria Jaworska – Altona, Germany, 1909
Hello everyone,
I am hoping someone in this community might be able to help me with a family mystery that I have been trying to solve for a long time.
I am searching for information about my great-grandmother Maria Jaworska, whose origins and later whereabouts remain unknown.
What I know so far:
- Name: Maria Jaworska
- Residence in 1909: Gerberstraße 16c, Altona (now part of Hamburg, Germany)
- Occupation: Domestic servant
- Son: Willi (Willy) Jaworski, born on May 21, 1909, in Altona
- The father of her son was not named in the birth record.
According to family information, my grandfather was originally registered with the surname Jaworska and later used the name Jaworski.
I have also been told that my grandfather grew up with his grandparents.
Unfortunately, I do not know Maria's date or place of birth, the names of her parents, or whether she later married, moved away, or returned to Poland.
Additional information about her son:
My grandfather Willy Jaworski later lived in Mecklenburg, Germany.
He married Margarete Rechlin on April 3, 1934, in Neubrandenburg. The family also lived in Kyritz, Brandenburg.
My questions are:
1. Does anyone have a Maria Jaworska in their family tree who might match these details?
2. Has anyone come across the surname Jaworska or Jaworski in Polish records that could be connected to Hamburg or Altona?
3. Does anyone know of Polish families with the surname Jaworski who emigrated to northern Germany around 1900?
4. Are there any additional Polish archives or historical records that might help me discover Maria's origins?
I would be extremely grateful for any information, suggestions, or possible family connections, even if they seem small.
I am happy to share the historical documents and records I have collected so far.
Thank you very much for your time and help!
Warm greetings from Germany,
Tanja _________________ Greetings from Germany!
Researching: Jaworska / Jaworski, Rechlin, Strasen, Semper.
Especially looking for Maria Jaworska, mother of Willy Jaworski (born 21 May 1909 in Altona, Hamburg).

Hi Tanja
Welcome to the forum!
You have a difficult puzzle to solve, trying to find your Maria Jaworska. Let me list some ideas that I have for finding clues about her.
1. Are you able to find Altona residence lists? (Meldungsregister, Melderegister or Einwohnerregister, whatever term was used there). The ideal timeframe would be as close as possible to Willy's birth. If you cannot get such a register book from 1909, it is still worthwhile to look at a few decades before and after that, just to get a sense of how many women named Maria Jaworska lived in Altona. Were there many, or only one or two?
2. You appear to have Willy's birth record but you did not mention whether it is a civil record or a baptism record. Usually a church baptism record would show the names of Maria's parents. These are the grandparents Willy lived with, right? Do you know when they died or where they are buried?
3. You have a marriage record for Willy. It may tell you whether his mother was still alive at the time of his marriage. This would help you narrow down a possible death date for her.
4. Are there Altona city directories from 1909 or close to that date? You could look at who lived on Gerberstraße to see if there were other Jaworski/Jaworska family members there.
5. You do not know in which town or city she was born, but you wondered whether she "returned to Poland" so maybe you do know which country she was born in? Westpreussen, perhaps?
If you would like to post some documents that you have, I would be happy to take a look and see if there are any details that may help discover more about her.
Best regards,
Sophia
