Post subject: Kazimierz CHMIELEWSKI, b. c. 1806 Grodno governorate, Great
Hello!
My ancestor Kazimierz (Casimir) CHMIELEWSKI, born about 1800-1810 "in Grodno", son of Jakub and Zofia ("Zoska"), emigrated to France after the 1831 uprising, married in Paris in 1841 and died there in 1868.
A Różana baptism (17 Oct. 1806, son of Jakub and Zuzanna; FamilySearch film 007765701, image 783) might be his. Does anyone know Różana / Jundziłowicze records, or lists of 1831 émigrés where he could appear (with his unit or home parish)?
Any story about the Chmielewski family there is welcome too. Thank you!
Henri de Marliave (Paris)

Hi Henri and Barb,
Barb, here is the link from family search for Kazimierz. Kazimierz is on the right side of the page - 4th one down from the top.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSMW-Z9PY-J?cat=koha%3A688019&view=explore&lang=en&groupId=M9MN-HKC
Henri, do you need the death or marriage record for Kaziimierz? I see the actual record on ancestry.com. I can get it for you if you need it.
Regards,
Trish

Hi Barb and Trish,
Thank you both so much for looking! Yes, that is the entry I meant: Różana parish, born 17.10.1806 at Jundziłowicze, son of Jakub and Zuzanna, godparents Teodor Leonczyk and Katarzyna Krokwicz (LVIA copy, FamilySearch image 782). Its weak point is the mother's name: in Paris his parents are given as Jakub and "Zoska" (Zofia), not Zuzanna.
Trish, which record do you see on Ancestry? His death (Paris, 18 March 1868) and his marriage (Paris, 23 December 1841) are known to me, but if you have found anything from the Polish side (other children of Jakub and Zuzanna, Jakub's death at Jundziłowicze in 1818, or an émigré list), I would be very grateful for the reference.
Other family: wife Pauline-Alexandrine Carchon; children Casimir (b. Paris 1842), Hélène (1850), Alexandre-Alphonse-Paul (1859). A possible relative: Eustachy Chmielewski, b. c. 1811 at Dereczyn, NCO in 1831, in Paris 1843-1857.
Warm regards from Paris,
Henri

Hi Henri,
The Eustache Chmielewski was born in 1811. His parents were Jozef Chmielewski and Rozalia Karpinska.
Here is his birth record on family search.

I'm a bit confused by your wording. Do you mean you already have the actual document for the marriage and death of Kazimierz? If you do not have the actual copy of the document, I can post them for you.
I did find another child of Kazimierz.

Hello Trish, hello Barb,
Thank you both very much — this is really helpful.
Barb: the parish I meant is Różana (Ружаны, Słonim district), not Różanka. The baptism I read is on FamilySearch film 007765701, image 783: Kazimierz, son of Jakub and Zuzanna Chmielewski, of Jundziłowicze, baptised 17 Oct. 1806. In Paris (1841 marriage) his mother is called "Zoska" (Zofia), so the identification is still only a hypothesis. A Jakub Chmielewski died at Jundziłowicze on 18 Aug. 1818, aged 46. Known children of Casimir in Paris: Charles-Casimir (died Saint-Gratien, Val-d'Oise, 1892), Alexandre-Alphonse-Paul (1859-?), Hélène, and others, by his wife Pauline Carchon.
Trish: thank you for Eustachy (parents Józef Chmielewski and Rozalia Karpińska) and for the 1856 census of Saint-Prix. Different parents, so not a brother of Casimir — but Saint-Prix is right next to Saint-Gratien, where Casimir's son died in 1892, so a cousin is still possible.
Would either of you know whether the Różana registers 1795-1815 contain other children of Jakub and Zuzanna, or someone who works on the Różana / Słonim parishes?
Best regards,
Henri

Hi Henri,
I would be interested to see the writing of his mother's name. Can you provide an image of that part of the 1841 marriage record? It surprises me that a marriage document would use a diminutive form of her name, Zoska, rather than her formal name, Zofia. I agree with you that Zośka indicates Zofia, but interestingly there is also a diminutive version of Zuzanna which is similar: Zuzka. It is shown online as a Czech or Slovak diminutive rather than a Polish one, but worth considering anyway.
I am sure you know that Geneteka has not indexed every book for every church, so it is wise that you are being cautious about accepting the birth record from Różana. The year looks good, his father's name is correct, and there is a possibility that this is the Kazimierz Chmielewski that you want. Then again, you were expecting him to be from Grodno. As far as I know, Różana was not part of the Grodno district. It would be worthwhile for you to see whether there are churches from the 1800-1810 timeframe that were part of the Grodno governorate that are not indexed on Geneteka.
I am not familiar with any lists of emigres that would show him leaving after the 1831 uprising. That would be the most helpful thing to find. Was he actually a participant in the uprising? I wonder if there is some Polish military archive or museum that holds lists of men from the uprising which would include their town of origin.
More questions than answers for you!
Best of luck in your search,
Sophia

Hi Sophia,
Thank you very much. Here is the 1841 record (attached). It is not the original: the Paris registers burned in 1871, and this is the act re-established in the 1870s by the reconstitution commission, from a family document. It reads: "Casimir Chmielewski, chapelier [hatter], passage Brady n° 20, fils de Jacques Chmielewski et de Zoska" — no surname for the mother, just "Zoska", which suggests the clerk wrote what Casimir said. So Zuzka / Zuzanna remains quite possible, and I will keep both readings open.
You are right about Różana and the Grodno district; I will look for parishes of the governorate not indexed on Geneteka, and for lists of 1831 insurgents with places of origin.
Trish, thank you also for Antoni (died Paris 8th, 9 August 1866) — a child I did not know.
Would anyone know who works on the Różana / Słonim area, or on lists of the 1831 emigrants?
Best regards,
Henri

Hi Henri,
Thank you for posting the image of the marriage record. It is very interesting to learn that it is not the original but rather one that was recreated decades later. If you have access to other records from that same set, may I make a suggestion? Could you browse through them and see if you can find names of people or places which begin with the letter G and with the letter Z, to compare the handwriting to the "Zoska" from Casimir's marriage record? I ask this, because my initial reading of what was written here for Casimir's mother is not Zoska but rather Goska. I interpret that as a G not as a Z, but since there are no other words on the page with capital G or capital Z, I cannot be sure. The name Goska does exist in Poland, although it is much more prevalent in woj. Podlaskie than in the area that is now Belarus. Geneteka shows an interesting marriage of a Jakub Chmielewski and a Franciszka Gosk in 1784:
https://geneteka.genealodzy.pl/index.php?op=gt&lang=pol&bdm=S&w=10pl&rid=551&search_lastname=Chmielewski&search_name=&search_lastname2=Gosk&search_name2=&from_date=1784&to_date=1784
To make it easier for you to see the scan of that marriage, I am attaching a screenshot. If you do follow Geneteka's link to the scan, it takes you to the beginning of the book, so you will need to advance to image 177 in order to see it.
I am not suggesting that this is your family, because it is also quite far from Grodno. However, I do want to encourage you to consider whether Casimir's marriage record is showing his mother's surname rather than her given name. Also, I think that Gosk and Goska are two independent surnames, rather than one being the masculine form and the other feminine.
Best regards,
Sophia

Hi Sophia,
Thank you — this is a very good point. "Goska" as a surname would change everything, and you are right that the clerk gave no other surname for the mother. I will compare the capital letter with other G's and Z's written by the same commission member (Boulloche) in the reconstituted records of 1841, and come back here with what I find.
The 1784 marriage of Jakub Chmielewski and Franciszka Gosk is interesting for the dates too: the Jakub I found at Jundziłowicze was born either in 1761 or in 1775, and a Jakub died there in 1818. I will keep it as a lead, with all due caution about the distance from Grodno.
Thank you again for your time and your sharp eyes.
Best regards,
Henri

Hi Henri, Trish and Barb,
I admit that I was confused by the geography here.
Looking back at Geneteka, the birth record for Kazimierz Chmielewski in 1806 and the death record for Jakob Chmielewski in 1818 in Jundziłowicze, parish Różana both have links to scans and both take you to Family Search, film #007765701. Family Search calls this "Ruzhany (Grodno)". The film notes there say: "Roman Catholic Church records (births, marriages, deaths) in Ruzhany, Slonim, Grodno, Russia; later Różana (Iwacewicze), Polesie, Poland; now Ruzhany, Pruzhany, Brėst, Belarus."
It appears that, despite the distance, this Różana was indeed part of Grodno Governorate. I am sorry for my earlier misunderstanding.

Hi Sophia,
Thank you for checking — that settles the geography, and it makes the Różana baptism of 1806 a stronger candidate. I will now look at the Gosk / Goska question on the 1841 record and report back.
Best regards,
Henri
