Hi Jerry,
Here's a good find for you! I am including a link to a book about the Church of the Good Shepherd, published to celebrate their 75th anniversary in 1973. There is a mention of Hedwig Mazgaj in it, referring to the year 1932. Unfortunately I cannot tell you the page number, so your best approach is to use the "find" feature on your web browser and look for "Mazgaj."
http://www.mipolonia.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Church-of-the-Good-Shepherd_1898-1973_Plymouth_PA.pdf
Then, do a second search, with the spelling "Masgay." You'll find Lawrence mentioned, referring to the year 1947.
My theory is that what you are seeing is your surname spelling changing between 1932 and 1947.
All the best,
Sophia
P.S. Just to be clear, I realize your Lawrence died in 1925, so he was not around in 1947, but if you read the text, it refers to those people whose memories were being commemorated by the installation of stained glass windows in 1947. So I do believe it is your Lawrence.

Hi Everyone,
I found this on Geneteka which I thought was interesting. I am not saying this is your ancestor. I am just posting it for I find it very interesting.
https://geneteka.genealodzy.pl/index.php?op=gt&lang=pol&bdm=B&w=09pk&rid=B&search_lastname=mazgaj&search_name=Wawrzyniec&search_lastname2=&search_name2=&from_date=1855&to_date=1855
I would follow Sophia's advice. You might end up with some great clues about your family.
| Quote: | Hi Jerry,
May I suggest that you wait until you hear from the genealogical society who holds the church records, before you get too far along on the path of accepting Stefan Miazga as being related to you. The marriage record should make it clearer what the family's original surname was (as you see from my other post, above, I have some doubt about Miazga) and hopefully will also tell you where they are from.
The death records seem quite solid, as being your family. You may need to take ages in death records with a little grain of salt.
All the best,
Sophia |
Have a wonderful day!
Trish

Post subject: Miazga/Masgay and Dedo Family Help
Hi everyone!
Sophia,
Thank you so much for your input! I think your message and idea makes a lot of sense, Mazgaj is definitely closer to Masgay than Miazga haha. I'm sorry I didn't reply to you sooner, I think I was typing my my last respnse on the 23rd when yours was posted and I didn't see it until today. I really appreciate your input and for taking the time to send links and help me find the answers I'm looking for. I think I got excited looking around on Geneteka, but I know it is important to not jump to conclusions and to be patient. I am blown away that you were able to find a book about the Church of the Good Shepherd where it seems like both people are mentioned!! That is incredible!! I am smiling very big right now and I can't wait to read on further when I get home.
Thank you again!
Dave,
Thank you for providing such a wonderful background and historical context for the time period and the events of Polish immigrants and the Roman Catholic and Polish National Catholic Churches! It is super informative and I really appreciate you taking the time to type this all out and to include links to try and help me learn about and understand the history and circumstances of my family and the larger Polish diaspora! I'm much better at Russian than Polish unfortunately, but I can still read some of it and I appreciate you including the link and paraphrasing for me. The Maps are also very cool and so detailed! Thank you again for taking the time to share this!
Trish,
Thank you for investigating this lead for me! I really appreciate your time. It does look very interesting to me as well. I am excited to hear back from the genealogical society!
Marie,
Thank you so much for sharing this with me! I appreciate you taking the time to share it. I had found that document already, but thank you so much for helping regardless of that!
A big thanks again to everyone!
Being a beginner to genealogical research, I'm not sure how much I can help. But I am a librarian, so if there is ever a document or article you can't access, I can always try to hunt it down. Similarly, I live in MD and if that is relevant to anyone's research, I am happy to try and find a grave, or help how I can!
