Just a question here : do you know if some Polish people used to change their name for German name during partitions of the country, or shall I consider that a people with a German name (in 19th century) was necessary German.

A bump more than 6 years later.
Is it fair to say that in some regions enforcement of last name requirements was lax, so that maybe only around 1830 was usage widespread in some distant places?
Also, in any areas were modern-style last names the norm before 1770?
