Post subject: Where did a couple get married in 18th/19th century?
Hi,
Where did a couple usually get married in the 18th/19th century? in the husband or wife's parish? Was there any rule or there was a decision made by the couple?
Regards

Hi,
Roman Catholic marriages ordinarily took place in the parish of the bride. Catholic Church law stipulated that the pastor of the bride's parish had the right to witness and bless the marriages of women who lived in his parish. Marriages sometimes did take place in another parish but for this exception to be licit the pastor of the bride had to delegate his right to another priest, i.e. grant permission to another priest to solemnize the marriage. (This rule still applies to Catholic marriages during the 20th & 21st Centuries. Not following this rule would make the marriage illicit but not invalid.) Obviously the above does not apply to marriages of Non-Catholics.
