Post subject: Laurentius Sekula Family in area of Nowy Sacz
My Grandfather was julian Sekula from Nowy Sacz Area in Poland. His Father was Laurentius Sekula. Grandpa julian immigrated in 1910 to shennadoah Pa. and worked in the mines. He married Mary Januz(e) and they left Shennadoah and moved with her family to Zanesville and then up to Waterford Pa. He lived on Comer Rd and they farmed there. Grandpa died in 1959 and I never got to know him as that was the year I was born. The farm was not far from Edinboro Pa and I was told Grandpa said the area reminded him of Poland. It is very hilly there and very beautiful. I was told Grandpa Julians mother died and his father laurentius married again. Not sure what the situation was but all 5 Children immigrated to America starting with John Sekula first, then Julian and then I believe it was another brother and 2 sisters. Can't remember the other brother but I believe he died in a mining accident on christmas eve in Shennadoah Pa don't no the year but on the same Christmas eve in Zanesville Ohio my Grandma Mary Januze Sekula's brother also died in a mine cave in and so when they got the calls they were so confused but finally realized there had been 2 mining accidents on the same christmas eve. They immigrated from poland because of the new stepmother. Not sure of the reason as I have heard conflicting things, one was she was not nice and the other was that she had a hearing problem and it was difficult so there were many misunderstandings. Not sure if any of that is true. My Grandpa was known in Shennadoah as the "the one who hung out with the protestants." I am not sure why. In Waterford my dad said that if Grandpa went to church he would go to this little church called Draketown Christian church on Draketown Road. My Grandma Mary was catholic and would go to the catholic church. My husband and I found out where this church was and we went there. I got to meet a gal who was 8 years old when My Grandpa went there. She remembered him and I found out my Grandpa would go on Sundays to their house to visit and talk as Her father could speak polish. When I met her i just cried as she talked and told me just a little nugget of my Grandpa that I never got to know. We have relatives on my Grandma Mary Januz side of the family who have done a lot of research on that side of the family but I know very little about my Grandpa. My dads oldest brother said that Grandpa Julian said that his father, Laurentius, worked for a land owner and he had to stay up all night to keep the wild pigs out of the area where the land owner lived and guard the area. They were very poor. To eat meat Grandpa would kill a rabbit at night and they would have to eat it at night and then bury the bones so no one would know. I was told my Grandpa Julian either stowed away on a boat or that He was sent money from big brother John to immigrate. One person thought that he left poland to avoid fighting in a war? The 1920 cenus says that He immigrated to America in 1910. It is thought that he stayed at the Bording House in Shennadoah Pa that my Grandma Mary Januze's family operated. Her Father was Szsmon Januze and He married Domicella. Would love to come to Poland to find relatives of the Sekula's !!! Any info would be so Appreciated.

Hello,
Attached is the passenger list for your grandfather, Julian Sekula. His precise place of birth is shown as:
Kąclowa [kɔnt͡sˈlɔva] is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Grybów, within Nowy Sącz County, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, in southern Poland. It lies approximately 4 kilometres (2 mi) south of Grybów, 20 km (12 mi) east of Nowy Sącz, and 91 km (57 mi) south-east of the regional capital Kraków.[1]
It shows his father is Wawrzyniec Sekula (Polish for Lawrence or Laurentus). It also shows he is headed to his brother, Jan Sekula in Shenandoah, PA.
I checked to see if there are any records online for Kąclowa, but I couldn't find any. Family Search has them, but they are not yet digitized. Perhaps another member of the forum can help you locate the Polish records.
Ancestry.com also has his WWII draft registration, PA death certificate, and several census records, but you may already have these.
At least you have the precise village of his birth. That is a necessary starting point for any further research.
Wishing you the best in your search,
Cynthia
