My Grandfather's Baptismal record indicates he was from Bagiencia Dabrowa Tarnoska and baptised in May (?) 1865. As we will be on the September Galacia tour we are wondering about maybe seeing some distant relatives. We are trying to translate but having difficulty with cursive.

Hi L3,

Here is the translation of the birth and baptism certificate. Dates are repeated in words and numerals with lines in the background as a security device to prevent the data being changed.

Wishing you a good trip to Poland,

Dave

Top of Certificate:
Left Side: Empire of Austria
Kingdom of Galicia
District/Powiat (County): Dąbrowa
Center: Number (of certificate issued): 274
Right Side: Diocese: Tarnów
Dekenat (Deanery): Dąbrowa
Parish: Dąbrowa

Certificate of birth and of baptism

The parish office of Dąbrowa attests to all and sundry of whom it is or may be of interest that in the baptismal registers of this church for the village of Nieczajna Volume XXIV, Page 122 is found the following:

In the year of Our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred Sixty-five that is 1865 on the seventh day (7) of the month of May was born at house number 36 in Bagienica, and on the 8th day of May 1865 by Reverend Jan (surname missing due to damage) was baptized:

Col. 1: Name of the one baptized: Piotr
Col. 2: Religion: Roman Catholic
Col. 3: Sex/Gender: Male
Col. 4: The (marital) bed: Legitimate
Midwife: Franciszka Toczek
Col. 5: PARENTS
Col. 5a: The Father: Wojciech Leżoń, a gardener*, the son of Jan and Maryanna Czosnyka
Col. 5b: The Mother: Anna Fido, the daughter of Benedykt and Katarzyna Zawierucha
Col 6: The Sponsors: Wojciech Leżoń and Katarzyna Kędzior, gardeners*

In testimony of which I sign this certificate with my own had and affirm it with the seal of the parish church.

Given at Dąbrowa on the 8th day of June 1894

Signature of the parish priest (Ludwik Kozik, pastor) with the parish seal.

Note: hortulanus/gardener was a term used to describe the social/economic status of an individual. Those thus described owned a cottage and sufficient land for a garden but not farm fields.
