I saw this episode as well. It was a great one. On one of her lines they were the Tartar people. I looked it up and this is what I found:
"Tatars or Tartars, collective name applied to the Turkic-speaking people of Europe and Asia. Most Tatars live in the central and southern parts of Russia, Ukraine, and in Bulgaria, China, Kazakhstan, Romania, Turkey, and Uzbekistan. They collectively numbered more than 8 million in the late 20th century. Most of the Tatars are Muslims.
The majority in European Russia are descendants of the Volga Bulgars which were conquered by Mongol invasion of the 13th century and kept the name of their conquerors. Tatars of Siberia are survivors of the once much more numerous Turkic population of the Ural-Altaic region, mixed to some extent with Finnish and Nenets (Samoyed) stems, as also with Mongols.
The name is derived from that of the Ta-ta Mongols, who in the 5th century inhabited the north-eastern Gobi, and, after subjugation in the 9th century by the Khitans, migrated southward, there founding the Mongol empire under Genghis Khan. Under the leadership of his grandson Batu Khan they moved westwards, driving with them many stems of the Turkic Ural-Altaians towards the plains of Russia." I found it on: http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/10921.
I hope this helps a little.

Good afternoon Babblingbrook!
Personally, I do not know if I do or not, anything is possible! In my family tree, I have been able to trace my Babcia fathers side of the tree but not her mothers side...yet!!! And I am still looking for my elusive ggrandmother, Helena Makuch who is suppose to be in the Szczucin area but she is still nowhere to be found but I will eventually find her, one day!!!
How did you find out that you do have a Tartar in your family? Did you have an indication because of the last name, like in the story of Martha Stewart or was it something else, if it is okay for me to ask?
Have a great day!
