I am interested in finding out if there is anybody out there with the last name "Kilar". THis was my mother's last name and her parents immigrated to Canada sometime in the early 1900s. I did not even think this was a Polish name? Could it actually be English? Does anybody have any information in this regard. I'm not even sure where abouts in Poland my grandparents came from. Thanks!

Check out this site. http://worldnames.publicprofiler.org/ It shows that Kilar is mostly prevalent in Poland. But, also in Germany and France. There are also some in England. And, of course, some in the United States. Looks like it is Polish.

Here is another site to take a look at. http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/ It gives a good distribution of the name in Poland.

Ancestry has a large listing of Kilar surnames on ship passenger lists to Canada. What were your mother's parents first names?

Thanks Joe! Boy, you work fast. My grandparents names were (coincidentally) Jozef and Emilia.

Ancestry shows the following, which may be your people.

Name Estimated Birth Year Birth Country Birth Town Date of Arrival Vessel Port of Arrival Port of Departure

Jozef Kilar abt, 1899 Poland Tarnopol 20 Aug 1926 Montcalm Montreal, Quebec Liverpool, England

Emilja Kilar abt. 1890 Poland Poczapince 18 Sep 1926 Aurania Montreal, Quebec Livepool, England

Emilja has two daughters with her, both born in Zagrobela. Franciszka is 4 yrs old, and Cecylja is 8 mos old. Emilja is going to her husband, Joseph. Looks like the address is Vegreville, Wattsford, Alta.

Have to go watch my tv program. Good luck.

By the way, are you in the US or Canada?

oh my goodness! I can't believe it. That is them for sure. My Aunt Frances just passed away a month or so ago. I can't believe that you did that for me - thank you so much! My grandparents went on to have ten more children. I'll be passing this information on to my siblings. You made my day! Thank you again.

ps I'm in Canada

I have Polish relatives with the last name Kielar. This is definitely a Polish name, and is thought to be Gluchoniemcy/Walddeutsche in origin. If you get stuck, Kilar might be a variation of Kielar.
