Post subject: Spittan, Posen (?)
Hello. I am hoping to find birth records for my great grandparents, Charles (Karl) Hermann Streip, 1850-1922 and Caroline (Liedke) Streip, 1853-1940. They came to Port hope, Huron, Michigan in April, 1881. They were married in 1874. Lutheran church records from Michigan says they were from Spittan, Posen. This is possibly Szpital near Inowroclaw. Caroline's sister Anna Liedke married Johan Pilaske from Inowroclaw, and they also settled in Port Hope, Michigan. I was unable to find records at LDS Family History Library, and no luck with Poznan Marriage Index. Also, I do not know Polish (or German). My great grandparents are of German descent, but US census records state both they and their parents were born in Posen, Prussia. Has anyone here ever heard of a village called Spittan? Thanks, Chris.

Could it be Spittau instead of Spittan, Posen, Prussia??

Thanks for your reply. Is this Spittau still known by this name today? Do you know if it is perhaps near Inowroclaw? (I'll try to find it on a map myself, but if you are more familiar, it would help)

Chris, I'm not familiar with the region around Posen and have never heard of Spittan, Spittau, or Inowroclaw. I just thought it could be a reading error. Sorry.

Thank you anyway, Ute. No, I do not think there is a Spittau in the area of Poland once known as Posen.
Thank you, too, Magroski. Yes, I saw the available LDS FHL microfilms. Since my great grandparents were Lutheran, not Catholic, I do not they would be listed here. The FHL had State records from Inowroclaw area too, but not for the years and Szpital area I was looking for.
So far, I'm still thinking "Spittan" must be Szpital, due to its proximity to Inowroclaw, and the fact that my 2nd great aunt was married there. I don't have any other clues. I don't think I'm ready to try contacting Polish record sources directly yet, due to language barrier and payment difficulties, but I'll keep searching. Most other U.S. records and obituaries for my great grandparents just say they came from Germany, but I know it was Posen, Prussia from the Michigan Church record, and 1920 U.S. census, and my father who told me that his German grandparents actually came from Poland. Thanks again, Chris.
