My grandfather somehow went to the Conservatory of Music in Krakow from the Zaleze area. Would his parents had to have money or importance to send him there? It was pretty far away, I would assume he had to have moved there. I found it opened in 1888 (he would have been 15 years old then), what kind of education would he have had in Zaleze?

My grandfather was also "picked" to be part of the Royal Guard for Emp. Franz Joseph. Does anyone know how the recruiting would have been done?

By 1897 he was on his way to America.

Two of my Swedish brother-in-laws were part of the Swedish Royal palace guards. Both of them were mountain guerrilla trained (Elks- in U.S., Moose)(you don't ever want to tick off a moose, ever). I suspect you grandfather was drafted, and found to be athletic,a good shot, and intelligent. Thus he may have been a natural pick by the guards recruiter. Musicians have very good fine motor skills, hence could be good shots.

Thanks for your thoughts. I know he was a horseman before going to the guard and he definitely was a parent who demanded respect and obedience from his sons.
