hello me and my family have been trying to piece together our family tree and i don't know if it was because of a loss of records due to both world wars or if there just isnt any information on it but my great grandma and grandpa originate from Poland and their last name is Kwolik now I tried to do some diggin on my own and I didn't find any history of that name so I tried going the route of similar spelling names and I eventually got from Kowalik to Chwalek but im not so convinced these are the origins of the name. Now I am told our name wasn't corrupted when they got through Ellis Island but you never know! Any knowledge someone might have will be helpful thanks much!

Hi,

Kwolik is a surname still found in Poland. According to the 1998 edition of Hoffman’s Polish Surnames: Origins and Meanings 230 individuals used the surname at that time. Another 1424 used the Kwolek version of the name. (Cf. attachment) Although some records were destroyed during the wars most are still extant.

In order to find birth, marriage, and death records it is necessary to know where the individuals lived. Keep in mind that during the entire 19th Century and the early 20th Century (until after WWI) Poland did not exist as a political entity. During the late 18th Century it had been partitioned between Russia, Prussia, and Austria so ethnic Poles would have been citizens of one of the partitioning countries. Two useful places to find information about where an individual lived in Europe are arrival manifests (like at Ellis Island) and naturalization papers.

Wishing you success in your search,

Dave
