Les, Leśniewski-; from Polish las "woods, forest", also from lesiak, leśniak "a man living in a forest". There are many towns and villages with the 'leś' root, e.g.: Leśnica, Lesiniewo.
Leśniewski is a popular surname in Poland, especially in the old Prussia and Polish - Prussia borders territories: in central Poland, Poznan area, north and north-east corner of Poland. In 2002 there were 5911 people by the surname Leśniewski living in Poland and the most lived in Warsaw (273), Lodz (179) and in Radom (113) areas.
In 19th century there were eight noble Leśniewski or Leśniowski families living in Lomza, Gniezno, Bielsko, Mazovia and Western Ukraine. They used following coats of arms: Rawicz, Gryf, Modzele, Pierzchała, Roch, and Grzymała.
