I am new to this. My grandparents immigrated to rhode island sometime around 1910. They are Stanley and mary milewski. They were in ri for 1920 census. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Mary,
Welcome to the forum. What else can you tell us about your grandparents? Do you know if Milewski is the original spelling? Do you have birthdates (even if only approximate year) for our grandparents? Did they marry in Poland? Did they come to America together? Any children born in Poland? Any sisters or brothers who also came to the US? Anything piece of info, even if trivial, might lead to a clue from someone.

Do you have the image for the 1920 census, or the link to the page? Having a chance to review the census entry for your grandparents might reveal some clues.

We are glad that you are here. Many of us wandered over here to Polish Origins when we were just starting out and didn't know what to do next.

Cheers!
Shellie

Hi Mary,
I looked at the 1920 census and I see that it says that Stanley immigrated in 1908 and Mary immigrated in 1910. The census information isn't always correct, but it's a place to start looking. It says that Stanley is 33. Do you know that to be a correct age? There are 49 Stanislaw Milewski's at the Elllis Island site:
http://www.ellisisland.org/search/matchMore.asp?MID=05490038800161308224&FNM=STANISLAW&LNM=MILEWSKI&PLNM=MILEWSKI&first_kind=1&last_kind=0&RF=49&kind=exact&offset=0&dwpdone=1
Not sure if that link will get you there. If you haven't been there before, it's free, you just have to sign in with a password. I looked at one Stanislaw that was 20 in 1908, going to his brother Julian's in Greenport, NY. Do you know if he had a brother Julian? Many of these Milewskis seem to be from the Russian partition that was once Poland, and I assume now in present day Poland. If you find a Stanislaw Milewski that you believe to be your grandfather, there are people on this forum that probably can help you find out the village in Poland.
Note to Shellie and anyone else trying to help - in 1920 the surname is written Milewsk. Mary, as Shellie said, the more information that you can share, the more people can probably help stear you in the right direction.

I would like to add that if they married in Poland and Mary came after Stanley, you should also look for her as Milewska, the feminine form.
Also, a good idea is to check if there is a common place for those Stanislaw and Maryanna listed in EI database.

You're very kind to help. I had a stroke about a year ago. No feeling on the right. I decided to pursue this beyond America. I believe my grandfather was older. He died before I was born. He was a miner (in rhode island). The 1920 census is confusing. There may have been "fusing" with another family in NYC.

Hi Mary,
This may also be your family in the 1925 Rhode Island census located at famlysearch .com: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-11588-10883-74?cc=1532195

Address: 32 Florence St. Not a whole lot of new information except that you can see that your grandparents indicated they were naturalized citizens.

What can you say about your grandmother Mary? Do you know her maiden name?

And your grandfather.....did he have any brothers that came to the US?

My grandmother's maiden name was berkovitz. I don't know of any brothers.
