Hi
My name is Gloria. I reside in NZ. I am attempting to find information in relation to my ancestral family that once lived in Poland. At the time they lived in Pomerania (which today no longer exists). The name of the village at the time was Alt-Valm (known today as Stary Chwalim) which is under the administration district of Gmina Barwick. Szczecinek County.
The family name is Volzke/Voltzke (varying spelling). The family immigrated 1876, on board German boat Fritz Reuter. The boat departed Hamburg, Germany, 12/4/1876, landed New Zealand, Wellington August 1876. My great grandfather by all accounts was born on this trip over from Germany (but to date have found no written evidence).
My great grandparents (great great grandparents) names August Volzke and Emily Mary (nee Eichstead)
I do realise there have been some major changes over the years, since as they were immigrating, and since their immigration of land masses changing hands etc. But would appreciate that if there be someone out there, that might have some information, or at least know if there is any descendants of this family left in close region today.

Thanks Gloria Sattler (Mrs)

Hello Gloria,
Your ancestors were most likely from Alt-Valm, Provinz Pommern, Kreis Stettin and their original names were Emilie Maria Eichstädt(t) resp. Eichstaed(t) (ae = ä in German) and August Vol(t)zke/Voelt(z)ke/or Foel(t)zke resp. Völ(t)zke or Föl(t/zke (oe = ö in German).

Perhaps the "Pommersche Forschungsgemeinschaft" -- http://en.informationssystem-pommern.de -- Gunthard Stübs, e-mail: [email protected] can advise you how to start the process of finding out more about your ancestors in Alt-Valm.

Hi Gloria,
Have you seen Tina's thread here at PolishOrigins? http://forum.polishorigins.com/viewtopic.php?t=134 She also lives New Zealand, and her relatives arrived there in March of 1876. Some of them were from
Starogard Gdański about 170 km from Stary Chwalim.

Since you are looking for living relatives in the area that your ancestors are from, I know some people have had luck with social networks sites such as Facebook, or Nasza Klasa http://nk.pl/

I was very fortunate to find a cousin in Poland this year. I found an address on the back of one of my grandmother's photos. Since it was about 50 years old, I didn't know if anyone would still be living there, but that would have been worth a shot I guess. What happened was that I found someone on a message board at Rootsweb.com, that lived in that town in Poland, and the had offered to help someone else. I e-mailed him, and he was kind enough to find my cousin and give her my address.

If you know the church that your ancestors might have belonged to, you can write to the priest, or minister, etc. and tell them that you are looking for relatives with your surnames, and ask him if he knows anyone to please give your letter and address to them. I have not done this, but it was a suggestion by Jonathan Shea, author of Going Home. You would need to write it in Polish.

Then there is that wonderful possibility that someone might read your post and find you here. It's happened, but it's best to keep searching where you can.
Best of luck!

Ute

Your reply intrigued me, u seemingly knowing how their names etc be.
Can I assume you have some experience/knowledge to do with this region
and family name? And if so what?

Thanks

Gloria,
Sorry about the delay in my response. The family names Vol(t)zke and Eichstaedt sound German to me, and since I live in Germany, I'm familiar with the spelling of surnames and given names. However, I've done very little research in Germany/Prussia and have no research experience in the area you are researching. For the past few years my research has been primarily focusing on the district of Nowy Targ, the region my paternal grandfather's ancestors came from.
But you have several good leads now that I hope will direct you to some useful resources or lead to contacts with other researchers who can help you progress with your family research.
I wish you good luck in your further research.

Hi Cheri Vanden Berg

I read ur reply with some interest.
I have attempted to find Tina on this forum to read her threads, but to no
avail. I realise you seem to have given me the thread to try, but couldn't find
her. Are you able to help in any other way?

Again thanking you to Ute, for all of your assistance thus far, it has given me a new
lease to reinvestigate this side of my family roots. I have done some extensive research
already, but was having some walls come up. But it had been some time since I had done
work in this area. Had decided to concentrate on one of my other family names SATTLER,
they also coming from Europe. My family line from Switzerland, but am trying to trace for lines still residing in Germany and Austria. Have secured all the generations back for Switzerland.
So again thanks Ute.

I am surprised that you weren't able to read what she wrote in her forum. Here is her profile:

Hi Odele
I have just checked into this site, its been a little while since checking for updated information.
I read with interest your saying that our mutual great great grandparents, already had one child before they embarked on coming to NZ 1876. Cos by all accounts I have been advised their first child Charles Frederick Alfred, who went on to marry Martha Askew and become my great grandparents, was born on board the Fritz Reuter, on the trip over from Pomerania departing from Hamburg, Germany. Also reading, that you have quite a bit of information in relation to the family tree, I would be so interested to have you email this to me, in bits and pieces or in whatever form you hold. I do have some information but would so love to be able to compare the limited information I have to what you hold and fill in gaps.
If you could contact me direct to my email [email protected].
Also I live in New Zealand, in the north island, Auckland to be exact. I understand that you live in New Zealand as well, what part?

Cheers Gloria Sattler

Hi Glorry Queen, sorry its been while, 3 opeations later I'm well enough to go on the computer. I have finshed Fanny Volzke-Moore family tree and pleased to find a large wedding photo May Moore her daughter who married my grandfather Cyril Parker, my father was Owen Parker who married Monica Hanright (Irish) in Inglewood. I am the only one in the family who has my fathers, and my granmothers features, which I am very proud of. you can also contact on [email protected]. I would love to know the culture and traditions of the Polish people.
