Post subject: Polish Town Help
My great grandfather John Poplawski immigrated to the US in 1891. On a 1904
birth certificate of one of his sons he is listed as being from "Pizzanow" Russia.
I am hoping that someone may be able to give me their best guess on the actual
name of the town. I am sure that whoever wrote the birth certificate wrote down
the best of what they heard. If my great grandfather had very broken English,
what town would be close to that pronounciation?/
Was John followed by any other member of the family? There is 224 Poplawski listed in www.stevemorse.org Gold Form. If one of them was related to John, that would make possible to narrow the area. It could start as Pi or Py, then +c, or +s, or + sz. Also, the ending could be -now, -nowo, -nowa, -nowe, together or separated from Pi...
pronunciation: http://www.ivona.com/us/ and select the polish flag and then a male or female voice, at your choice.
