Post subject: Ellis Island, the "Threshold of America"
About six million people arrived at Ellis Island with a peak in 1907 when more than one million immigrants were processed. The Ellis Island Immigration Center opened on New Year's Day 1892. A fire destroyed the original wooden buildings in June 1897 and a new immigrant station was built that included a 365 feet long and 165 feet wide fireproof main building, a hospital, bath house, kitchen, dining room, and laundry building. Further information on the history of Ellis Island can be found at: http://www.gjenvick.com/Immigration/EllisIsland/1898-02-26-TheThresholdOfAmerica.html Please check out the entire website at: http://www.gjenvick.com It holds a wealth of information on the subject of emigration/immigration.

Hi Ute,
I missed this information when you first posted it, but yesterday I stumbled upon the Gjenvick-Gjønvik Archives site myself. As you said, it contains a wealth of information and I highly recommend it to anyone here who has ancestors who immigrated via ship. The first-hand accounts of steerage passengers is amazing and provides insight into what my ancestors must have endured during their travel to America.
Brian
