Post subject: surname Surowicz
Hello, I am new to the site. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the origin and meaning of the surname Surowicz? I have an immigration record for a great-great grandmother that says place of origin was "Czajkowa." Is this only a Jewish name?
The surname Surowicz originates from the Polish adjective surowy meaning "raw, crude, coarse, unrefined".
If we look at it as a Jewish name, it seems to me it would be a metronymic meaning "son of Sura". It was rare in Poland for surnames to originate from the mother, but it did happen.
In 2002, there were 54 individuals with the surname Surowicz living in Poland. A detailed map of the surname distribution can be found here https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/Surowicz
As you can see most representatives of this surname lived in the following towns and cities:
Słupsk (13)
Sucha Beskidzka (6)
Gdańsk (6)
Lwówek Śląski (5)
Bolesławiec (5)
Warszawa (5)
Polkowice (3)
Kartuzy (3)
Gdynia (2)
Kwidzyn (2)
