After the war my father came to Britain where he was with the Polish Royal Air Force and was stationed at various place one being RAF Portreath in Cornwall. He ended up staying in Cornwall and married my mother. At that time because he was foreign he was classed as alien and had to report to a local police station on a regular basis, it was the police that had his birth certificate and lost it. Although it is some years now since he died i would love to replace it, what is the best way to get a replacement birth certificate from Poland.

Alex,
I assume he was born after 1912. Records newer than 100 year old are kept in the Civil Register Offices, in Polish Urzad Stanu Cywilnego. You would have to know his birthplace in order to find out which is the USC that holds his birth record. It is expected that you will have prove you belong to his immediate family.

Alex, I confirm what Gilberto wrote above. Customer service at Polish Civil Register Offices has improved a lot in comparison with the past but they are still quite bureaucratic. They will not do the search for you. You have to provide the exact date and place of birth, and then you have to pay for the certificate (it's a cost of about 25 zloty, or 5 GBP). I am afraid it will be difficult to arrange it remotely, without a local person.
If you could let me know about your father's date and place of birth, I can ring the relevant Office and make an initial inquiry.

Thank you very much for your replies Gilberto and Slav. Since Gilberto's reply i have sent the USC at Dabrowa Gornicza an email but in english to see if i would be lucky to have a reply, if i didn't i was going to use a translation site to send it in Polish.
Any help would be fantastic, he was born 26-07-1920 in Dabrowa Gornicza and called Robert Skowron but there is this thing that the family name was shortened when they settled in France when he was a young boy so Skowron may have been Skowronski, you may remember already writing to me about this Slav. My grandfather was called Felix but we are trying to confirm my grandmothers name with some family in France which will take a few days.
