Post subject: what is this place?
Please help me in deciphering this place name. This is part of an 1822 marriage record from Szczepankowo parish (in Eastern Poland). The groom (Adam Szpizarny) was born in the Grodno/ Hrodna area of Northwestern Belarus, just over the border. I'm having difficulty deciphering how his birthplace is phrased. I understand "Rofsyiskiego" is Russia.
But could "Jendory" be "Indura", a village just South of Grodno?
And what is "Kraju"? Is it also a place? Perhaps a village in Indura parish? Or something else?

Hi,
I can offer part of the answer to your question. Kraj means country; it takes an ending here because of the preposition. I would translate the phrase "w kraju panstwa rossyiskiego" to mean "in Russia." It is, if taken literally, a bit more of a stilted phrase, something like "in the country of the people of Russia" or some such.
As for where, specifically, the place is, I can only say I think you have made a very good connection between what is written in the document and what is on the map. I hope others who are more knowledgeable about geography than I am will add to this.
Best of luck with your research,
Sophia

I think it is possible that the baptism took place in Indura.
There was a romancatholic parish there.
You can try to find the baptism record in the Volume 261-1/5-6 Births 1785-1811 for Indura romancatholic parish. You can find it on FamilySearch.

Okay thanks Marcel. Now I can delve into Indura's records feeling more certain I have the right place.
