Hello,All,

Researching my husband's side now.His grandfather,Michal Jusko and brother Jan.
They came from Gorecko Stare, some place in Poland/Russia .
I don't have a clue where that might be.
They changed their name from Juszko to Jusko.
The family has no idea or records except that Michal was married to Paulina Macierowska .
If anyone knows where the surname originated or what it means, please let me know.
I've checked out Poznan Project,Ancestry.com,and the beta search of the Latter Day Saints, but have come up with next to nothing.

Thanks for your help if you can shed some light on this !

The only Górecko Stare in Poland, former Russia partition, is located in today's Biłgoraj county, about 25 miles south west of Zamość, click here for map: http://bit.ly/i8VByv . Parish seat was in the neighboring village Górecko Kościelne and plenty of roman catholic records from this parish, even from 1700s, can be found in the Polish State Archives, click here for details: http://bit.ly/dFrqWG .

And have you checked Polish Genealogy Databases tool Question Click here http://polishorigins.com/databases/ to enter the surname and/or places and search through millions of pages with information and vital records from Polish genealogy sources.

Now about your husband's grandfather surname.

Juszko, Jus-; from Polish name Józef, Justyn, Julian. Józko, pronounced the same as Jusko, is old, one of diminutive forms of the given name Józef (Joseph).

In 2002 there were 330 individuals using the surname Juszko living in Poland. Detailed map of the surname distribution can be found here https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/Juszko .

Researching my husband's tree now.Family doesn't have much information. Grandfather was Michal Jusko and brother Jan,from the the Russian part. I think it was Gorecko Stare.Michal's 2nd wife's maiden name was Pauline Macierowska. They are buried in Dunkirk Ny. St. Hedwigs Cemetery.
I don't have dates yet,but i think that they came through Ellis Island.
Thank you if you can give me any hints on tracing them.

Hello, i preliminary checked Ellis Islands records and found many Jusko's coming from area near Górecko Stare. Michał and Jan might have been born in Górecko Stare, but sometimes Ellis island records show Last Residence, well they might moved to other village before emigrating to USA.

I believe that real name for your husband family is Juśko. Checking nazwiska-polskie site https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/Ju%C5%9Bko shows many many people living near Leżajsk and Nisko with Juśko surname, but none with Juszko nor Jusko.
"Jusko" surname do not sound same like Juśko, its just name with ` removed. "Jushko" might be phonetical implementation of Juśko surname in english, but going back from english Jushko to polish, gives us "Juszko" (not Juśko). I think there might been misinterpretation of the surname in the past.

There are available vital records online for Górecko on szukajwarchiwach site http://www.szukajwarchiwach.pl/88/608/0/?q=XARCHro:88+XTYPEro:zesp&order=syg_order&wynik=13&rpp=15&page=1#tabJednostki I know its just Górecko (not Górecko Stare), but the archives come from Zamość Archives (Zamość is next to Górecko Stare) and a village named just Górecko is in the diffent part of Poland. So i believe szukajwarchiwach just missed "Stare" in the title. Yes, i've already checked scans and these come from Józefów parish, near Górecko (Stare). These are in russian language, so i can't help in deciphering them.

Do you have some more information about ancestors that came to Usa? I saw On Ellis Island none of Juśko's were from Górecko Stare. Instead, there is Marya Jusko with two children coming to husband? Michał on 1906. She might be first wife of Michał. Her last residence is Starepniasto ( Stare Miasto). There is a Village Stare Miasto near Leżajsk. Michał might be Mihaly Jusko from Leza... (i read on original manifest as Leżajsk) coming to usa on 1900. What you think?
Yet another edit. Paulina Maciorowska might been from Brzozów coming to Usa on 1902. Her surname was mispelled and written as Macsorowska and town written as Rwzozowa. Not sure about her, because her young age.

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could help. My grandfather name was Istvan (Stephan) Juszko. Lived in Hungary, born around the WW1. We dont know much about his parents, grandparents, it was forbiddel to talk about them, bc his father was a red soldier. So we know nothing about the origin of that part of the family. Anyone any idea how can we find out? He died already, just like my dad, and the whole part of that family. My father couldnt even tell if they are from Poland or Russia.

Thank you

Hello,

Welcome to the forum. We can try to help, but need more information - if you have it. Such as:

Do you know the name of his wife?
Can you estimate his year of birth? 1917? 1915?
Did you trace documents for your father such as marriage records, death records, etc.? There may be some clues for your grandfather contained in your father's records.
Where did your family end up living? Did your grandfather immigrate? If so, to where?

In general, you need to start gathering the most current family documents and then work your way back...

Let us know if you have more info. Any detail can help.

Best,
Cynthia
