Post subject: Surname Strega
I am interested in finding information about the surname Strega (Also written as Stręga I think). What does it mean? I've been told that it could be related to the name of a village called Strzegów written as "Strega" in German, located in Poland, or to Strega in the old Prussia, near the German-Polish border. I found information here of a person interested in this surname Strega/Streger from Guben, Poland. The person who brought it to my family was the son of an immigrant couple so we don't have any information available, any help or information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!
I've checked Hoffman's "Polish surnames" and several other sources in Polish and I have not found the ethymology of the surname Stręga.
Nowadays this is a rare surname - only 9 people is bearing it in today's Poland, all of them living in the village Myszewko in Żuławy region (near Gdańsk). See the distribution map: https://nazwiska-polskie.pl/Str%C4%99ga.
I cam across an interesting article mentioning the Kashubian word strëga, which means in Polish struga - a stream, creek. This might be a correct trace.
Do you know anything about your Stręga ancestors? Where did they came from?
