Hi, I'm Australian born, of Polish parents and I would love to find information about my Polish ancestors. Smile

My paternal grandparents are Wincenty Markowicz (or Markiewicz) and Marianna Tekieli of Rybna, Krakow born about the mid 1890's. They married about 1920 and had 4 children, one of whom is my father Piotr born in 1927.

Also my maternal grandparents Andrzej Zadlo born 18th Nov 1892 in Spytkowice Krakow and Stefania Lukaszka born 14th Sept 1901 in Skawa Krakow. They married around 1922 and had 8 children, one of whom is my mother Kinga (Kunegunda) born 1926.

How do I find out if the records are still with the church offices or at the national archives? And how do I know which branch of the church or archives holds records for the villages where my ancestors were born? Confused

Whilst I speak and read Polish its the language I learned over 40 years ago so I find it difficult to understand some of the modern language and terminology they use now. I've been researching my family history for the last 3 years without much success as I've found many of the sites are American based and deal with Poles that have migrated to the U.S. If anyone can suggest any good Polish sites (in Poland) or where I should start I would greatly appreciate you letting me know. Smile Basiu

Basiu,

As a rule of thumb, records older than 100 years old are kept at the Archiwum Panstwowe. Some are kept at Archidiocesis Archiwum.
You can check the PRADZIAD database in http://baza.archiwa.gov.pl/sezam/pradziad.php and you can narrow your search by selecting urodzenia/malzensw/zgonow.

Your Rybna (there are three) has birth records only up to 1861, which does not cover the year Wincenty was born. Marriage records for 1920 must be in the USC (check http://www.usc.com.pl/ and click on Urzedy at the top of the page).

Spytkowice. Births for 1892. http://baza.archiwa.gov.pl/sezam/pradziad.php?l=&mode=showopis&id=17690&miejscowosc=spytkowice&rodzajaktu_id=20

Skawa. Records must be in Raba Wyzna. http://baza.archiwa.gov.pl/sezam/pradziad.php?l=&mode=showopis&id=17681&miejscowosc=raba%20wyzna&rodzajaktu_id=20

A word about the Urzad Stanu Cywilnego. If a place is too small, there will be no local USC. You then have to look for the Gmina where it belongs. Rybna, for instance, is found in Czernichów (always use polish diacritical when searching in polish websites).

As to polish websites I would recommend you www.genealodzy.pl (check Katalog linków and Biblioteki cyfrów).

Hi Basiu

I am one of Muriel and Kazimeicz (1925-2003) grand daughters from England.
I’m sure you are aware he had 3 Daughters and 2 sons. 8 grandchildren, and lots more great grandchildren.... My mum is Janette. Then there’s Margaret, Elizabeth, Vincent and Andrew.

I loved seeing the Paternal Grandparent names on here as Grandad rarely spoke of Rybna to us. I was 30 when he passed away. He always wanted me to go to Poland with him, but he said he would stay if he did ever go.

I have a photo of Grandad and Nan if you want me to share. I am sorry I can’t fill in any gaps. I just wanted to say hello. X
