I am looking for my Maternal Great Grandmother's village in Poland. Her name was Alexsandra Rutkowski Lewandowski, She was born in Poland on December 11, 1894. Her fathers name was Leon Rutkowski and her mothers name was Anna. She married a Joseph Lewandowski but I'm not sure if she came into the US as a Rutkowski or Lewandowski, I have not found her immigration records.

The 1920 US Census indicates she came into the country in 1913, her birthplace is listed as Russia Poland, the 1930 US census indicates she came into the country in 1913, her birthplace is listed as Poland, This information is exactly the same for the 1940 census.

I have found the record of a visit she made back to Poland from the US in 1925, I am attaching two files. The manifest indicates she was visiting her father at his residence listed as Bognowhala Irstr Polk Poland. She indicates her village of birth as Pieslawa.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have found her in www.stevemorser.org Gold form:
She arrived on May 5, 1913, on ship The Prinz Friedrich Wilhelm (departured from Bremen on April 26). She was single, 18 years old, maid servant, her father was Leon, who lived in Rakochino, Plock (I have checked Plock area and could not find this). Her destination was Syracuse, to a cousin named Antoni Cerwinski, living at 1411 Gamose ? SW Syracuse NY. Birth place listed as Rakoczino. I will take a look at older maps to see if I can find this location.

Just found them: Rokicie and Boguchwala, less than 2 miles away (see map attached).

What you refer as Pieslawa may be Piastowo, not that far Boguchlaw and Rokicie.

I found this listing before while searching Ellis Island records. I doubted it was correct as she was not traveling with anyone, but looking closer more pieces fit. I was not sure if she was married when she came into the country.

Thank you very much for the help!

Hi Lorrir and Gilberto,
Dear friend Gilberto, you are the best Polish searcher on planet!, yes, I can only add Polish censuses 1990/2002, and Polish white pages confirm the possible origin of the Gma Aleksandra Lewandowska (thus, the family Lewandowski, as Polish surnames suffix -ska is for female), as in this very old Polish village Rokicie we can find as still living and farming families surnamed Lewandowski:
1. Barbara Lewandowska & family Lewandowski, Rokicie, Poland
2. Marianna Lewandowska & family Lewandowski, Rokicie, Poland
And also few Rutkowski's in nearly located villages.
==
We can add also for Lorrir's Amercian/Polish Immigration History Book:
FAMILY ANCESTRAL PROVINCE
The family Lewandowski's and Rutkowski's ancestral province, culture, customs, folklore was Mazovia - Mazowsze central province of Poland, and here is the hyperlink with base info:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mazovia
FAMILY ANCESTRAL VILLAGE
Rokicie, noted from the 15th century, an old Polish village as a net of Polish Small Nobles - Drobna Szlachta, in the 19th century under the Russia rules, counted in abt 1880-1902 the 18 homes and 319 inhabitants, here is this Rokicie with present-day Polish Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rokicie,_Sierpc_County
FAMILY ANCESTRAL CHURCH, PARISH, and CEMETERY
Polish historical sources confirm the parish, church, and cemetery for this Rokicie and nearby located villages was Ligowo.
Here is the image of the church where the Aleksandra was baptized in one happy family Lewandowski's day in the year 1894:

GENEALOGICAL RECORDS
Fortunately this parish Ligowo church/civil records have survived all cruel the 20th century, 2 World Wars, and 45 years of communism after the WWII Jalta Political Pact giving Poland to Soviet Unon, and they are available in Poland, in Polish state archives and parish, and also they are accesible in the US, and may be ordered from FHL/LDS centre in Salt Lake City:
Years 1731-1825 as originals:

And years 1808-1887 as copies:

FIRST VIRTUAL TOUR TO FAMILY ORIGIN IN POLAND
All can visit virtually the families Lewandowski and Rutkowski's ancestral lands, local roads, small woods, and rivers, hers is this land from air, please use computer mouse and zoom + and - to see and touch more:

The zoom + is giving a chance to see even the family ancestral cemetery in Ligowo located amongst local fields:

Tad,

Thank you so much for the information. My great grandmother was Alexsandra Rutkowski her parents were Leon and Ann Rutkowski, I have found the records that indicate my Great Grandmother was a Rutkowski when she left the country and became a Lewandowska in America. Jozef Lewandowski her future husband might have been from her home town, I have not found a link yet. Jozef Lewandowski seems to be the Polish version of John Smith and I am still looking for a date of birth for him.

Alexsandra's obit indicates that when she passed in March 1969, she had two brothers and a sister still alive in Poland.

I'm still looking.... Thanks for the help.

I'm now looking for Antoni Cerwinski, the cousin who met my Great Grandmother when she arrived America. I have been told that she did not have an X in front of her name on the ship manifest, so someone had to be waiting for her. I am not finding much on him using Ancestry.com

Asking my Polishorgins friends for more help.

Hi Lorrir,
I'm curious about what you said about an x in front of your grandmother's name. Can you share her manifest, or provide some information so we can see her manifest? I've seen many women on ship manifests who were detained and did not have an X in front of their names. It would be interesting to explore the possibility that she may have been detained after all.

Hi Shellie & Lorrir~ My grandfather does have an X in front of his name on the manifest & I did find further info. for him because he was detained. Although I believe he was waiting for a rail ticket from the brother-in-law in MN that he was going to, not waiting to be met by someone. Requirements for women may have been different though, especially if they were travelling alone. ~PL

From Stephen Danko's blog (stephendanko.com/blog/268) :
If you already have found the passenger manifest for your immigrant ancestor, take another look at the manifest and look for annotations. Two types of annotations were made. The first type was made prior to or at the time of arrival and includes:

■Numbers in the left margin (typically 2 to 7 digits), especially on lists of ships that sailed from England. This number is the contract ticket number and may be helpful in finding the individual in the British “Outbound Lists”.
■Rarely, a solitary number to the left of the passenger’s name will indicate a Head Tax receipt number.
■“Not Shipped”, “NOB” (Not On Board), “Did Not Sail”, or “Cancelled”, often with the entire line crossed out indicate that, for some reason, the passenger listed did not sail with the ship.
■Sometimes an entire line is crossed out, not because the passenger was not on board, but because they are officially listed on another page of the manifest.
■An “X”, “D”, or “Held” at the left of the manifest, between columns 1 and 2 or in the name column, means that the passenger was temporarily detained or held for a Board of Special Inquiry and the name may have been recorded with further information in a list at the end of the manifest.
■The notation “S.I.” or “B.S.I.” at the left side of the manifest before the name means that the passenger was held for a Board of Special Inquiry hearing and the name may have been recorded with further information in a list at the end of the manifest.
■The notation “USB” or “US Born” or “USC” (US Citizen) may have been made to indicate that the record is for a returning citizen of the United States.
■The letter “C” followed by a string of numbers (C-######), indicating the Naturalization certificate number, may have been made on the records of returning citizens.
