Post subject: Prussian emigration to France then USA
Ok, so I have been unable to locate an immigration record for my German ancestor Antoine Andermann:
1803 Catholic baptism of Antonius Josephus Franciscus ANDERMANN in Weigelsdorf (village) Reichenbach (high district) Breslau (lower district) Schlesien (province) PreuBen (Prussia) Deutschland (Germany)
renamed Wigancice / Wroclaw / Silesia / Poland after WWII
The first record that I have of my Antoine is his marriage to Hortense Katterlet in 1835 in New Orleans, Louisiana
My understanding is that there was a rebellion against Russia in 1830 (November uprising) where folks emigrated to a variety of places such as France, Switzerland, and/or America.
I found a record of an Antoine AndermaTT who immigrated to USA from France in 1834
(Note - he is listed as farmer which his godparent on baptismal record was as well as his descendants still have farm land in Louisiana). His future wife Hortense (family origins in Belfort) migrated from France in 1834 as well
This raises the a couple of questions:
1.) Could my Antoine have emigrated from Prussia to France and his record states a Swiss rather than German spelling of his surname?
2.) Could Antoine/Hortense have met in France or New York before moving to Louisiana where she had some distant relatives and they were married there?
Any guidance you can provide is appreciated

Hi Laurie and Trish,
At first, I must admit, I was skeptical. What impact would the turmoil in Russian Poland have on a young man living in Prussian Poland?
But as I look at the details, it does become interesting. First of all, you know from the records in Louisiana that you need Antoine Andermann and Hortense Katterlet to be in Louisiana in time to get married in 1835. Now you have two ship manifests, with names very close to the spellings you want, both arriving in New York from Le Havre only about 2 weeks apart in the summer of 1834. The transcript that Laurie posted shows his age as 28, which is the way I read it from the image of the manifest that Trish posted (even though the transcript from Trish gave his age as 23, which I disagree with) and that would give this Antoine a birth year about 1806 where you are expecting it to be 1803. Not too bad. Based on Hortense's age as shown in census records from Louisiana (a different thread on this forum) we are expecting her to be a good few years younger than Antoine and so this also fits.
And here is another thing that intrigued me. There was a death of a Jan Andermann in Warsaw in 1821. Here it is indexed on Geneteka:

This Jan Andermann was 57 years old, from Frankenstein which is very close to your Weigelsdorf. He died in the hospital. Now, although I don't know of any Jan Andermann connected to your Antoine, it raises the possibility of Andermann family migration into Russian Poland, perhaps not long enough to create other records that we can see on Geneteka, but even so....

P.S. Here is the link to Hortense Katterlet's ship manifest. She did not sail alone. There is a woman listed above her, "M. Katterlet," age 39. Her mother?

Post subject: Katterlet origins in Alsace near Switzerland
Yes, probably Hortense was traveling with her mother Marie Marguerite ROY Katterlet. The Katterle family traces back to the Alsace region of France which is near Switzerland. Her mother's maiden name of Roy would have been the link to her relatives in south Louisiana.
Note: Andermanns ended up settling on the German Acadian coast in Louisiana where other families from Alsace Lorraine (territory in Europe which switched between Germany + France over the years) had farmland.
