Interesting, I recently heard a story from my cousin that my grandfather may have emigrated from Poland in 1909 when he was 18 to avoid being drafted. Came from Galicia (part of Austria at that time). _________________ -Mike
Wow, your comment got me thinking. I recall my grandfather saying his father was a draft dodger. He was born in Galicia and immigrated in 1912 when he was 16 or 17 (he always gave 1895 as his birth date and I recently located his birth metric which says 1896). What age were they drafting men at that time? I have his U.S. draft registration for both WWI and WWII. Makes me wish I had got my grandfather to elaborate.
