Post subject: Kaczmarczy/Uckiewicz Familiies, St. Joh of God Church, BOY
I noted mention of St. John of God Church, Back of the Yards, Chicago.
My parents, Walter (Wawrzyniec) Kaczmarek (Kamarczyk)b. abt.1895, Stopnica, baptized Sw. Wawrzynca, Cerekiew (Bochnia) and Helen Uckiewicz, b. 1908, Chicago were married at St. John of God Church, 22 June 1929.
I imagine the Uckiewicz and Kaczmarzyk families were members of the parish. They are:
Parents of Helen, Edward Ivan Uckiewicz b., 1857, Suwalki. Barbara Zofia Pietkiewicz, b., 1876, Kowno. Siblings of Helen Uckiewicz: Angeline (Aniela) Teresa Uckiewicz, b. 1903, Poland; Bernice (Bronislawa) Uckiewicz, b. 1905, Chicago, m. St. John of God Church l Sep. 1924 to Albert Kovar, b. 1900.
The first member of the Uckiewicz family to emigrate to U.S. (1875) was John Uckiewicz. b 1860, brother of Edward. who changed his name to John Lucas. After his arrival in the U.S. he ran a employment agency for new immigrants from Poland. I believe the business was on the Southside of Chicago, but lack further information.
I believe other branches of the Uckiewicz and Kaczmarek families lives and worshipped in the Catholic churches in the area. I would appreciate any hints or helps in obtaining further information regarding this family.

Hi Dorothy,
I am at best an amateur at this, but I will try to give some ideas for you. Please understand I am assuming you are new to this like I am.
For me, a very good start was the 1940 census. I immediately found members of my family I knew about. I also discovered that I also had a great uncle that was unknown to my father and I.
There is an excellent site, stevemorse.org that has a number of different sections for searching the census records, as well as the Ellis Island passenger lists. This site will search other sites and then present the information to you in one place rather than searching 2 or 3 sites on your own.
Familysearch.org is also a great online searchable site, and they also have a huge microfilm library that you can rent and view at a branch of their church. I've not done this personally, but I am going to in the near future.
The Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court also has a site, http://www.cookcountyclerkofcourt.org/NR/about.aspx which has some naturalization records available.
The best advice I can give you from my own personal experience is to have a great amount of patience and leave no possible lead uninvestigated! Good luck with your search.
