Post subject: Polish records
Why is it so difficult to get old (100yrs+) polish birth records from Poland, when my distant polish relatives can get them so easily form any Polish National Archives, based in Poland?? I am glad for the LDS website in their effort in scanning a very "limited" amount of records to microfilm, but the places I have look for them makes it very "difficult" to retrieve them? I hope the Polish government can allow more researches access to their "old" files, after all the people we are researching have been deceased for over 150 + years and I think that covers "any privacy" issues they are so concern with.

Kesikowski,
To the best of my knowledge APs do not refuse anyone a copy of BDM records, older than 100 years. The more data you know about the person you are looking for, the faster you will get a response. Some APs accept your request by email, some only by snail mail; some send you the records found as attachments to your email address, some don't; some perform a search by one confession at a time, some look for catholics, lutherans, jews at the same time; some perform a search restricted to ten years; some do a bit longer; some charge an initial fee of 25 zlotys, some charge 50 and even more; some charge you higher price if the record is in russian or german, some charge you the same price for any language. I have dealed with Torun, Wloclawek and Lodz and I am satisfied with their services. On the other hand, Elblag and Poznan are difficult to work with, which is not say you can't obtain records from them.
Additionally to LDS films (for some time online only to church members and now available to all users, thanks to changes in Polish government policy) you may want to check Geneteka database in www.genealodzy.pl (some are just indexes, some are scanned images), as well as the ZOSIA system (records from some AP that are being digitalized).
