|
Larry,
The following explanation is not of earth shaking importance, but for the sake of accuracy here it is.
The numbering of the Sundays as 24, 25, & 26 refers to their position after Pentecost NOT after Easter. This reflects the Roman Catholic Liturgical Calendar which was in use until the post Vatican II reforms of the Calendar. Pentecost, from the very name, (in Greek) indicates the number 50 and the feast occurred 50 days after Easter. Sundays named in relation to their position after Easter in the old Liturgical Calendar obviously cannot exceed 6. In the current Roman Catholic Liturgical Calendar the Sundays after Easter and before Pentecost are still named according to their position after Easter. Sundays after Pentecost are no longer named in relation to their position after Pentecost Sunday but are now numbered in terms of ‘Ordinary Time’ as are the Sundays between the Feast of the Epiphany and the beginning of Lent. The Liturgical numbering system of Sundays is usually of no great import for genealogical purposes unless an important date is only recorded in terms of the Liturgical Calendar without the corresponding date as found in the Gregorian Calendar (the secular calendar in common use).
As a side note, Greek numbers play a prominent role in the naming of geometrical shapes. Thus a figure with five sides is known as a pentagon, one with six sides is a hexagon, one with seven sides is a heptagon, one with eight sides is an octagon, etc. No big surprise that the Greek numbers are heavily used in Geometry since Euclid of Alexandria was the Greek mathematician who is known as the ‘Father of Geometry’.

Post subject: Request for Translation
Hi, I am new to this forum, and am exploring my roots in the Marijampole/Prienai/Garliava, Lithuania area. Many of the records there are written in Polish. I've attached a record for which I'd like a transcription/translation. It appears to be the death record of Karol Zabrowski (#24) in 1865. It comes from the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Garliava. Image is attached, and link to image on FamilySearch is provided. Thanks in advance!
