My GGrandfather is Wojciech Giewont from Dzianisz born in 1884. He immigrated to the US in 1903 and went directly to home of a cousin
in Oliver, PA, Uniontown, PA; Lubrozy Katoja (the handwriting is difficult to read so this could be a misspelling).
He worked there as a coal miner, sent money back to the family in Poland and made several trips to see his family including one
with his wife and 9 children in Oct 1924 - Feb 1925.
His father was Jendrej Giewont. At the time of his death in 1958 he was survived by 2 sisters in Poland.
Giewont is an uncommon name, and Dzianisz is a small town. What church would individuals in Dzianisz attend in the 1880s?
Any idea what records are available for research in this area? Family connections welcome as well as guidance. Thank you.

I think you may find many more families with this surname because it is famous for the "Sleeping Knight of Giewont." Giewont is a mountain (6214 ft) just south of Zakopane, part of the Tatra Mountains. The 3 peaks together look like a knight laying down with his helmet on.

Dzianisz is just north of Zakopane, I will check my files later today for you as it is 4:15 am now. Please go to my Góral Highlander forum and click on the "yes" button as your are a Góral and welcome to join our group. Dziękuję Bardzo, Bill

Jozef Bubak who has conducted extensive research on the history of surnames in the Nowy Targ district in the 1960s, indicated that the book of births (liber natorum) for the years 1786-1829 and the book of deaths (liber mortuorum) for the years 1786-1815 were in the Dzianisz parish.

Source: Bubak, Jozef: Nazwiska ludnosci dawnego starostwa nowotarskiego, Wroclaw [u.a.]: Zakl. Narodowy Im. Ossolinskich. - (Prace onomastyczne; ...) Cz. 1, 1970, 18-19.

I found the following response made by Paul K. Bingham of the Tatra Area Research Group (see http://www.e-targ.org ) to a query in 1999 re: the Dzianisz and Chocholow parish records: 'I read your WorldGenWeb posting -- my greatgrandmother was also part of the Chocholow parish when she was born in the town of Dzianisz, PL in 1869. As has happened over the last century and a half many towns like Dzianisz and probably Ciche, too, now have their own Parishes. In many instances the records were then moved to the new Parish.'

In the Podhale Area Research Group (PARG) newsletter # 2 Sept-Oct 1999 he also wrote about his trip to the Podhale (see http://e-targ.org/Resources/E-Newletters/09%2610-99PARG.html -- sroll down and read: MORE ON THE AUGUST TRIP ... 'We did visit the Polish PARG towns of Chocholow, Czarny Dunajec, Dzianisz and Witow in September and were able to find priests there ...'

If the records you are looking for are not in Dzianisz, they may be the Chocholow parish. I would try and write to both parishes:

Parafia Blessed Mary Czestochowskiej
Dzianisz 174
34-514 Dzianisz
Poland, Europe

Parafia św. Jacka
Proboszcz ks. mgr Stanisław Syc
Chochołów 195
34‑513 Chochołów
Poland, Europe

I had a look at your great-grandfather's April 1903 passenger record, the person he joined in April 1903 looks like 'acq. Jendry (Jędrzej) Mateja, Uniontown, PA/Oliver, PA'.

I also had a look at his February 1925 passenger record when he returned to the US (Ralph, PA) with his wife and nine children from a visit to his father Jedrzej Gewont in Dzianisz and noticed that the family was indexed under the last name GEWONT.

Hope the information will be of some help to you.

Thank you. This is very helpful. I crossed referenced Jedrzej Mateja in the census and there is an Andrew Mateja and his wife Anna in Uniontown from 1900 to 1940 census. I did not find a passage on ellis island for Andrew, but did find one for a Jan Mateja going to Uniontown, PA from Ciche, PL. This is so close to Dzianisz, so it seems more than a coincidence and worth exploring further.
I will write to the parish and hope to hear from them regarding records.
Do you know if this area is on film at LDS?
I would love to hear from anyone with relatives from this area migrating to Uniontown,PA area.
