Hello! I've been putting together my family tree and I've come to a dead end on my great grandparents, who are from Poland, and I was wondering if anyone here would be able to help me or give me some good sites to use that aren't ancestry.com and preferably in English since I don't speak Polish, but a little Russian.

Here is all I know: my great grandfather is Matthew Jamrosz from Mielec and lived from Sept. 1882-Aug.1958. His wife, my great grandmother, was named Mary Maziarz (not sure where she's from) and lived from about 1891-Feb.1969. My aunt on this side of the family seems to think she (my g.grandmother) might be Hungarian based on her last name but that is just a rumor. At this point there is basically nobody on this side of the family that could give me any more than that. Any helpful hints or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Ancestry.com actually has passenger records for free until March 17th. You might want to start with finding
her name on a manifest to see where she is from. If she came through Ellis Island, you might not need to look at Ancestry (which has other ports as well). This is the Ellis Island gold site: http://tinyurl.com/ap3jyev
where you can play around with part of a first and last name if need be. Your problem may be deciding which Marya (the first name is going to be Marya or Maria in Polish) Maziarz is the right one. There are a number of women by that name.

The census might help with that, and you can find some free images at www.familysearch.org. Some libraries have free access to Ancestry or Heritage Quest where you can look at the census. In some years there is the year of immigration, so that will help narrow down Marya Maziarz from the manifests. Also her age in the census might be correct, and that will narrow them down. If Matthew or Mary emigrated in 1907 or after, it might have a family contact person in Poland, and quite often that is the mother or father, so you will know at least part of the next generation.

If you know the church where they married, they could have their birthplace and their parents names in the records. I didn't have any luck with that with my grandparents, but I've seen records that are worth pursuing, so you actually might want to start with that. A wedding record might have their age as well.

Oh my, they are hard to find. I think Matthew is Mateusz (someone please correct me if I'm wrong), but that didn't help me find him. If you haven't already seen the family in the 1940 census, he is indexed as Majto Jarosz at Family Search: http://tinyurl.com/cs5z3ar

I have found Matthew and Mary's family in 1930 in Mercer County, NJ Maybe there was a language problem because the enumerator wrote down his name as James Matthews in the census:

I don't think you'll be able to see the original at Family Search. It does have the information that both of them immigrated in 1908, and they were both Naturalized citizens. It said that he was 21 when they married, and she was 16. If that is correct, and the immigration dates correct, they would have been married before they left Poland.

I found Mary at Ellis Island arriving on Nov. 25, 1909 going to her husband Matusz in Trenton, NJ. You can find her two information of pages under the name Jamroz, Marya from Grochoweghorzelec (Didn't find it on the map, and it looked like Grochowe Chorzelec to me, but didn't find that either. There is a Grochowe not far from Mielec). It says that she was born in Wala Bar. I think that means Wala Baranowska, which is close to Mielec as well. You can search Google maps to see. Her contact in Poland was her brother-in-law. I'm not sure of the name, but it must be her sister's husband.

I found Matthew arriving Dec. 29, 1907. He is indexed as Matensz Jamruz. He's going to the same place as the gentleman on the line before him, and his contact is Marianna J__, which is probably Mary. It says that he is from Grochowe.

Maybe Chorzelów?
Grochowe is 14 km NNE from Mielec, and in between there is Chorzelów.
Wola Baranowska is 17 km NNE from Grochowe.
All on Google maps.

Best,
Elzbieta
