Post subject: Finding Vital Records
Hello,
I've been conducting an extensive search for the vital records of my paternal ancestors. Through my research I've noticed that you are most likely to find them in old church records. Recently, I've seen people discussing using the Polish State Archives to find vital records for family members. I am curious if anyone else has been successful at finding vital records of their family members from the Polish State Archive and what the process was like. Additionally, I do not live in Poland, so an in person visit would most likely not be possible right now. Any assistance with this matter would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Dryber,
I looked back at your earlier post from January, and it seems you are searching in the parish of Rzeczyca Ziemianska which is in Lubelskie. You are in luck! There is a website that has indexed records from that parish (among others), and provides you with links to the scans that are in the Polish State Archive. This is much easier than going to the online Polish State Archives and finding the records yourself, but of course it can be done. For now, see if what you need can be found here. Take a look here:
https://regestry.lubgens.eu/viewpage.php?page_id=1057
It may be intuitive for you to figure out how to use the website. As an example:
First, select the parish (parafia) from the menu of choices. Then enter the surname, for example Kalisz (nazwisko) and click on "szukaj" which means search. The first block of names are all baptisms, the second block of names are deaths. In the case of the Kalisz surname, there are no marriages indexed in that parish but if there were, there would have been a block of those as well.
When you see an individual you are interested in, you can click on "skan" to see the image from the church book.
If you go to the "nazwisko" block and remove Kalisz and enter Chmiel, then click "szukaj", you will find many people!
Best of luck in your search,
Sophia

Thank you for providing this useful insight! I will start to explore this database of vital records more. I also have ancestors from former Galicia, specifically in the modern day Malopolskie region of Poland. I would like to find their vital records from Galicia as well, but I am finding this to be difficult. Are there any databases for the Malopolskie region of Poland that have scans of vital records available? Also, are there any other resources you recommend to help me in my search for Galician vital records?

Hi,
What you might try is Geneteka:
https://geneteka.genealodzy.pl/
While it covers the whole country, some areas are better represented than others. Also, there may or may not be a link for "skan" (link to an image of the record) for each person indexed. It depends very much on the person who did the indexing.
One resource you can use to see where records are kept (and for what span of years) for an individual parish is here:
https://parafie.genealodzy.pl/
But again, some are more informative than others.
It may seem bewildering at first. Feel free to post questions here if you get stuck.
Best regards,
Sophia
