Post subject: Great Grandfather born in Ryglice 1897 - Polish or Austrian?
Hi All,
in search of my polish side of the family, I am a bit stumped at my Great Grandfather who was the first to immigrate over to the US.
In looking at documentation found on the US side, I see that he was born on 1897 in Ryglice. Ellis island documentation shows him putting down Austria, Ryglice as where he came from. It seems this town went back and forth between Polish territory and Austrian territory.
I can't find out if I should locate his birth certificate in Poland or in Austria. Any suggestions? I've tried searching church records and cannot find his birth records for 1897. I am trying to search on the Austrian side but not finding much useful resources there either.
In addition to this, later on in his life, he moved back to Poland and died there as a Polish citizen. So I am confused on if he was originally Austrian, but then returned and got Polish citizenship? Or was he always Polish? Any advice on solving this?

Hello,
can You give Us as much details as You can pertraining Your great grandfather? It would be easier to find more information on him.
We can ask for his death record to get more information on his parents, the place he was born etc.
Greetings,
Marcel.

Thank you so much. Yes, I can give as much detail as I can here:
John Joseph Wrobel (although when he came into the the US at Ellis island, he put down Jan Wrobel)
He was born either 1/24/1897 or 1/26/1897 (I found two different dates he's listed on different documents in the us0
He was born in Ryglice, which I believe was Austria at the time. On his Ellis island documentation, he's listed as from Ryglice, Austria and Austrian citizen.
But it's confusing since later on when he filled out his naturalization papers, he listed that he does not hold his allegiance to Poland. And later on in his life when his wife passed (which he married in the US), he moved to Poland and passed away there in 1980.

Did You check the Ryglice parish church records for 1897? The documents are available on Familysearch under the key:
If You have the access to the FamilyCenter You can make the research on your own, at the bottom of the list, under the title: Akta urodzeń 1870-1901 (Ryglice)

Thank you, yes, I've been trying to search familysearch but have not been able to find it yet. I assume his birth certificate is probably in Tarnow archives, is that right?

Wow, this is incredible. I've been spending a week doing this and could not find any of this. How were you able to get the picture? I tried those familysearch sites but it kept telling me the images could not load. Thank you so much for doing all this info. This is amazing.
Can I give you some contribution for finding this for me? I am so grateful for this.
Now a couple of other things I'm trying to find and wondering about, do you know if there are any records of passports? I know initially My Great grandfather Jan did not have a passport when he immigrated to the US, but after his wife in the US passed, he moved back to Poland and re-married and lived the rest of his life there, so I assume he had a passport...and marriage certificate (since he re-married there in Poland). I think all this will help me prove citizenship through descent.

Hallo,
I am glad that I could help you!
I have downloaded some information that may be helpful.
In Civil Registry Office (USC) Tarnow you can get his wedding record (act no. 289/5 and death record (act. no. 334/83) . You also have his last place of residence
Contact this office to obtain these documents:
Civil Registry Office Tarnów
Address. 33-100 Tarnów ul. Gumniska 30
tel. 14 68 89 085
e-mail. [email protected]
In USC you don't get help with a passport, but they can help you get another document called in Poland "dowod osobisty".

Wow great find! Similar situation with my great grandfather Jan, who also first married and became a widower, then re-married in Poland when he returned there.

Hi,
Attaching what I was able to find today.
I do not have access to documents that can give full birth dates, so they are calculated from wedding and death records.
Now I must take a break from searching. Other work awaits.
Wedding Wrobel-Swiatek (Juny 6th, 1826)
Wedding Wrobel-Boron (February 4th, 1793)
Everything (births, deaths and weddings) in Ryglice.
