Post subject: Masculine/Feminine surname ending?
Wondering if anyone could answer my question here;
During research when reading over any marriage records I've found, it seems like any last name ending in a vowel is changed to a feminine version when listing the bride.
For example,
the bride is listed as Marianna Jagadzinska
her father is listed as Joannes Jagodzinski
Is this the common practice over there? And how does this effect my search? (Meaning, is this why I could never find anyone when searching maternal lineages??)
Yes, it is common practice over here . What's more, it is Polish grammar rule. You should change endings of feminine to "a". To make things even more complicated when you would like to say about marriage (plural form) you should say Jagodzińscy .
