Post subject: Lesewig origins
My paternal great grandparents were Frank and Julia Lesewig who immigrated to Greenpoint Brooklyn in New York in 1881. From U.S. census records in 1900 they listed their nationality as German but when Poland became free again in 1920, they listed themselves as Polish. I don't know where they came from in Poland but think it must have been the area under Prussian control. Also Lesewig is not list listed as Polish surname in Poland. Any suggestions as to what the last name could have been before arrival in the USA and where they came from in Poland would be welcome.

Hi dear Gerald,
We don't want to leave any searcher without our help and reply, every our ancestor deserves our best memory and homage, with this very limited information I can say for today:
My Polish old eyes see your Americanized family name "Lesewig" as maybe Polish Lisiewicz, and with this name I can tell:
LISIEWICZ
This very old Polish family name is cognominal in origin, and directly derived from the Polish language and word "lis", meamning a fox. Polish etymological books confirm the Lisiewicz is noted here from the year 1600. In that group of Polish surnames we have also Lis (1253), and Lisaj, Lisak, Lisik, Lisikiewicz, Lisienowicz, etc.
Here is the surname location map based on the Polish census 2002, with 1651 adults surnamed Lisiewicz living in a few parts of Poland, including old Germany lands:

The other version of family name: LESZEWICZ, LESIEWICZ, etc.
Your best move: you must find their petition and declaration of intention, as naturalization documents in the U.S., that will give you the exact place of birth/origin in Prussia/Germany-Poland, this forum other helpers from the U.S. would give you an advise how to make it. I've checked NY Ellis Island immigration port database, plese tell me if any of these immigrants would be connected to yours Framk - Franciszek and Julia, please use this search engine, and carefully check ship manifests: http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/eidb/ellisgold.html?
Checking with Fran...... and different versions of Lisiewicz:
