Post subject: Villages destroyed in WWII
Hi,
For years I have been trying to find if there is a comprehensive list of all villages that were destroyed in WWII.
I understand that during communism era such list - if there was one - would mention only those destroyed by the germans.
I have found the list below on the net, but I think there must be much more. Gminas and powiats were not available.

It has been remarked on earlier threads how little we know in Western Europe and the USA about the scale of losses inflicted by German security operations in Eastern Europe.
I have just found an old Polish book, "Hitlerowski Terror na wsi Polskiej 1939-1945" (Warsaw, 1965) that details German security operations in Polish villages (within the post-war boundaries) that killed 10 or more civilians. In almost every case this also involved the partial or total destruction of the village concerned.
There appear to have been 769 such villages. In 21 of them between 100 and 370 people were killed.
The book contains charts listing the name of each village, the date of the incident, the number of known dead, the German branch of service involved (where known) and the sources of the information.
The book also contains a ten page English language introduction. The charts, although in Polish, are very clear, so this book is easily accessible to English speakers. | [/quote]

Krasowo-Częstki is a village in Podlasie. The Gestapo searched the largest village in the area (they picked Krasowo-Częstki), they used the village as a act of retaliation against the successful polish partisans in the region. Residents were divided: men, women, and children. All brought to one yard and were executed. The bodys were buried in two ditches. The village has been completely burned down. God bless their souls. _________________ pl.kan-therm.com

Based on the number of pages and publishing dates, 636 for Zbrodnie hitlerowskie, published 1981, compared with 169 for Hitlerowski terror, published 1965, the former would seem to have a lot more information.
