Post subject: Czyzew, Podlasskie - 1762 Birth Index -what does it tell me?
From Geneteka for Pawel Piotr Mlodzianowski (Marciniak) Record No. 10 and 36 Remarks: data from the index.
The indicated page shows Pawel Piotr Mlodzianowska listed as No 10 and 36 births for the year 1782
Why would he be listed twice?
Were there two infants born?
What do the numbers to the right of the entries mean? Does this refer to another record or book?
What do the column labels translate to?
I have never been able to get this far back in time before (Thanks BarbOslo and Sophia) and can't find any references to indices by googling.
Thank you so much for your help!

Hi Marian,
Well, this is a puzzle.
Let's start with what the columns say. The first column is the "Akt" or record number, which is assigned sequentially as the year progresses. The second column is the surname and given name of the one who was baptized. The third column is labeled "card number." That's interesting. So this index was developed by someone who had a stack of index cards. (*see note at bottom of this post*) I take that to mean that at some point in the church's history, they found it helpful to create cards from what was written in their old registers. Today, we would make a database, the idea is the same. You can sort the cards if you want to see them sequentially, or alphabetically, or for whatever purpose you have.
As to why there are two cards for Pawel Piotr Mlodzianowski, I cannot guess. What I can tell you is that this is one child with two given names. If you look on the right hand part of the page, you will see the entry for Akt 97 as an example of two children (twins) in the same baptism. In this case, a boy and a girl.
Too bad Metryki does not have scans from the original books, so that you could figure out why this puzzle arose. For what it is worth, I see that number 16 and 42 also look like duplicates.
Best,
Sophia
P.S. Aha! There is a whole group that repeats. Someone who made the cards did a particular page twice.
* Note: Not sure I have this right. Can "numer karty" mean page number?

Hi again,
I really must correct my error. I interpreted "numer karty" to mean card number. But I see that there is not one card per baptized person (so my "sorting" idea is out the window). Is this an old way of saying page number? Hopefully Barb can correct me.
I see you just posted another image. Let me look and get back to you.

I read the header on that first page as "Register of church baptism records found in the book from November 1, 1667 to February 15, 1695 at the Czyzew Parish."
