Kroke is an interesting instrumental ensemble from Kraków. At the beginning they performed Klezmer music (The band's name in Yiddish means Kraków). They also draw inspiration from the world music from Balkan, Middle East and jazz.
They are popular outside Poland and recorded one album with Nigel Kennedy.
Their songs, "The Secret of the Life Tree", featured on the soundtrack of David Lynch's 2006 film: "Inland Empire".
Is there any similar group in the USA? Maybe "student music" is close to folk?
Stare Dobre Małżeństwo (in English translation "good old marriage") is a Polish music group.
The band derives from the so-called "student music", popular in Poland. This musical style is characterised by the use of a guitar for accompaniment, while the lyrics often talk about hiking in the Polish mountains, love and adventure. SDM, however, quickly created their own style, and became famous due to their interesting musical interpretations of poems written by the famous Polish poet Edward Stachura. Another important author, who worked with the band, is the Polish poet Adam Ziemianin.

Anna Jantar was a popular Polish singer in 70's. Her husband Jarosław Kukulski composed many of her hit songs. She is also a mother for other popular Polish singer: Natalia Kukulska.
Anna Jantar died in the plain crash near Okęcie Airport in Warsaw on 14 March 1980.
Listen to one of her biggest hits: "Tyle słońca w całym mieście" (it can be translated as "So much sun in the city").
Wishing you a little bit of sun for weekend!
Anita Lipnicka is certainly one of the most popular Polish pop music singers and songwriters.
She started her career in early 90's, as a teenager and quickly became a top star in Poland. At the beginning she was singing in group Varius Manx, later continued with several solo albums.
In 2001 Anita Lipnicka started to work with John Porter (they are also a marriage and have a daughter). In 2001, Lipnicka started to work with John Porter. Together they recorded two albums, "Nieprzyzwoite piosenki" (Indecent Songs) in 2003 and "Inside Story" in 2005. Both albums were all in English.
There is one of the albums that I like particularly, although it is not well known: "W siódmym niebie" (Seventh Heaven) recorded with the group Voice Band (where the leader is Anita's brother).
These are old, Polish songs from 20's and 30's (and also some modern in retro-nostalgic style). All of this is half seriously, half facetiously.
Listen (and watch) the song "Stachu" (this is the diminutive from Polish name Stanisław):
