Most of our PolishOrigins Team members once either danced or played an instrument in a folklore group. Today, for #PolishSoundsForFriday we present you performance of Rzeszow Suite by ZTL UMCS folk group from Lublin University. Some time ago Magdalena danced and yours truly played accordion in this group .
" My melody of Love" with Polish chorus " Moja droga ja Cię kocham" ( in English "My dear I love you") was sang in 1974 by singer of Polish origin Bobby Vinton.
Thanks to this song Bobby Vinton obtained the nickname "Polish Prince"
Well-known in 1960s and 1970s Polish band "Czerwone Gitary" (in English "Red Guitars" with the song "Passing Year" sings about the past year.
"Mija rok, dobry rok z żalem dziś żegnam go, miejsce da nowym dniom, stary rok, dobry rok"
In English ( "That was the year a good year ... I let this year go with regret, it will give the place for new days, the old year, a good year)
Zbigniew Wodecki is an institution in Polish music! Singer, instrumentalist, composer, actor. Everyone knows him.
In 2015 he met the young alternative Polish group Mitch & Mitch and together, with the help of the Polish Radio Orchestra they recorded again the old (and not so popular) Zbigniew's album from 1976.
It was a big hit in Poland and all concerts are sold out.
This song is my favorite - so optimistic!
Traditional music in Poland is still alive. Have a look at this dance festival from Lublin!
The band is "Tęgie Chłopy" (Burly Guys).
They are playing the traditional dancing music from Kielce area. Trying to reach the oldest repertoire, the band members drove together hundreds of kilometers in search of musicians and singers of the region. They are learning the local melodies from the oldest musicians still living in the area.
Just listen and watch how the country party in Poland looks like!
And if you would like to feel the multicultural atmosphere of Lublin, you will have this opportunity by joining our PO Kingdom of Poland Tour: http://polishorigins.com/document/kingdom_tour
For today's Polish Sounds for Friday I found such surprising mix: Sokół Orkestar is Polish band playing ethnic music, especially the one performed on brass instruments. It concentrates largely on the unique style of playing these instruments, so characteristic of the Balkan region.
I found their song in a funny way describing famous Polish road from Kraków to Zakopane (called "zakopianka").
And speaking of Zakopane, Kraków and "zakopianka", you can see what attractions we have prepared there for you during our PO Galicia Tour: http://polishorigins.com/document/galicia_tour
Today for Polish Sounds for Friday I prepared simple, popular song by group Voo Voo and vocalist Katarzyna Nosowska.
This song is on my mind always at this time of the year. What is it about? To make it simple: it is about waiting for spring and for better times. I wish you optimistic weekend!
Last Monday was the death anniversary of Anna Jantar. She was one of the most popular Polish singers from 70's. Her dauhter is Natalia Kukulska (also a popular Polish singer).
Anna Jantar died in plane crash close to Warsaw Airport on March 14th, 1980 coming back from her tour in the USA.
Today is Good Friday, in Christian tradition the day of meditation and mouring. Listen to this incredible concert by Adam Strug and the band Kwadrofonik "Requiem ludowe" (which can be translated as "Folk requiem"). This is newly composed music, immersed in the tradition of Mazovia region traditional songs and lyrics from the Pelplin song book from 1871.
Two weeks ago we were recalling Anna Jantar. I am not sure if you know that her daughter Natalia Kukulska is also a popular Polish pop singer experimenting with soul and R&B music styles.
Although she is constantly recording, she will be remembered in Poland from her first album from 80's with songs for children.
Her songs "Puszek Okruszek", "Co powie tata" and "Zuzia lalka nieduża" have raised already 2 generations.
