Hi All

I have become aware that my great grandfather was a policeman in Warsaw as at March 1919. My query is, given that the police force in Warsaw was only commissioned (or should I say recomissioned) in July 1919, where would I be looking for further information on him?

Thank you.

Hi,

Not quite sure what you are hoping to find, but I assume from your question that you are interested in police-related news that might make mention of your great-grandfather.

If you go here:
https://polona.pl/

And use the search terms Warszawa and policja, you find dozens and dozens of issues of the publication "Rozkaz Dzienny" which are very short (2 to 4 pages) and include the names of people. No guarantee that your great-grandfather will be among them.

For example, here is one issue of the "Rozkaz Dzienny" from 1920:
https://polona.pl/item-view/9ebe3247-d6b2-4fb1-a255-6c8d0877e787?page=0

In some cases, the people named are likely to be ones who broke the law, however in another issue I did see that there were names of constables being put on sick leave. So it will be very hit-or-miss. Also, it is entirely in Polish and so the task seems daunting, but given a grey day and a nice coffee, you might make some progress and at least get a flavor of what was happening in the city, as he would have seen it.

I did not continue far enough in the results of the above-mentioned search to see if there are photos or books that might be of interest to you.

Hope this is helpful,
Sophia

Thank you so much for your response Sophia. Any sources of information are welcome, so I will have a look at these as you suggest.

Kind regards, Michelle
