I am looking for any info I can find about a Yakov(Jacob/jacub) Edelstein from before the war.

I cannot find anywhere his birth or parents marriage or birth of his parents.

The info we have:

-Yakov (Jacob/jacub) Aryei (or Leib) Edelstein/Aidelstein born to Avraham (Abram) Pesach (Peisach/Pejsach/Pesakh) and Feiga (Faiga/Feigel) nee Mlamed (Melamed).

-His legal documents say he was born Oct 3, 1923.
He was born in Dubienka (discrict of chelm, Lublin) or Volodymyr Volynskyy (Ludmir). his legal papers say Dubionke.

-His child says that he was born in Ludmir and lived there all his life. He would also talk about his three sisters who perished in the Holocaust.

I checked JewishGen, Yad Vashem, yizkor books, but did not come up with anything concrete.

Anyone here has any suggestions of where to continue the search?

Thank you,

Hi!

Are the names Rachela and Lazar related to Jacob? Did the family go to the USA? I found a record for a Jacob, Rachela, and Lazar going to the USA? Jacob has the same date of birth of 3 October 1923 born in Lublin.

Please let me know if this the correct family.

Regards,
Trish

Yes, thank you! This is the correct family. They never made it to USA. They moved to Munich.
I think I have all his and his family documents found in the Arolsen Archives and the JDC Archives.

Best,

Hi Ufgeleigt,

I just wanted to make sure I was looking for the correct family for I did find them in the Munich, Vienna and Barcelona Jewish Displaced Persons and Refugee Cards, 1943-1959 (JDC).

Trish

Hello Ufgeleigt,

I looked at the records in the online Polish Archives, and saw the "Collection 35/1724/0 Civil status records of the Dubienka Synagogue District 1826-1922 (AP Lublin)" here:

https://www.szukajwarchiwach.gov.pl/zespol?p_p_id=Zespol&p_p_lifecycle=1&p_p_state=normal&p_p_mode=view&_Zespol_javax.portlet.action=zmienWidok&_Zespol_nameofjsp=jednostki&_Zespol_id_zespolu=4461

The books of births, marriages and deaths are arranged by year. However, when you look carefully, you will see that some of the books include records from more than the year in the title. For example, the book of births, marriages and deaths for the year 1920 includes births from 1920, 1919, 1915, 1913, 1910 and 1907. I do not understand why those births were recorded so late. Some books include indices, some do not. I suggest you look in as many books as possible, to try to find your family. The ones that I looked through do not seem to include the surname Edelstein/Ajdalsztajn (or any other variation of spelling) nor the surname Melamed. It could be that they are there but I did not look at enough pages to find them, or it could mean that the family was indeed from Ludmir instead.

Good luck in your search,
Sophia

Hi Ufgeleigt and Sophia,

Familysearch.org has a nice list of Jewish websites to try.

https://www.familysearch.org/en/wiki/Jewish_Genealogy_Research

Per the documents I found from the Munich, Vienna and Barcelona Jewish Displaced Persons and Refugee Cards, 1943-1959 (JDC), stated Jacob was born in Lublin. His wife, Rachala was born in Wilno, and the son, Lazar was born in Passau. Maybe there are some clues in the records from these towns.

Trish

Thank you so much for looking!
I know his wife was born in Charkov, Russia and not Wilno. This means the legal documents were switched to be able to leave Russia after the war.
There is a great possibility he did the same, and wrote Lublin so he can leave Russia.
